Brentford 2-2 Manchester City result: Premier League updates as Bees stun City with late comeback

Brentford came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Manchester City in a breathless end-to-end encounter at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Both teams missed a string of chances in a remarkably open match, but it looked as if City had picked up a fourth straight win in all competitions when Phil Foden scored twice in the second half – the first of which was an outstanding volleyed finish from Kevin de Bruyne’s superb cross.

But Brentford did not let their heads drop and pulled a goal back through the tireless Yoane Wissa. And the Bees got the equaliser that their display deserved when captain Christian Norgaard headed home in stoppage time.

The home side very nearly snatched it at the death, only for Bryan Mbeumo to be denied by a brilliant headed clearance off the line from Nathan Ake.

Manchester City were 2-0 up with 81 minutes gone, but very nearly lost this game. Gvardiol and Ake had both produced superb last-gasp clearances to deny Brentford earlier in the match, and Ake was at it again in the very final minute of added time, clearing off the line to at least ensure that City leave London with a point.

Brentford captain Norgaard has been speaking to TNT Sports after his stoppage-time goal earned the Bees a point.

"Even though we were two goals down I thought we played a good game," he said.

"We hung in there and the team kept going and I’m very proud."

Man City’s disappointing form seemed to have come to an end with three straight wins leading into tonight’s match. But Brentford’s brilliant comeback has ended that winning run and further reduced any dwindling hopes that City can pull themselves back into the title race. This 2-2 is City’s fifth draw of the season and they have now dropped points in 11 of their 21 matches. The air of invincibility is well and truly gone, and the way Brentford played showed that clubs across the division smell blood. The Bees were outstanding all evening and didn’t give up even when Phil Foden’s brace looked to have earned the visitors all three points. City will lick their wounds and look to return to winning ways against Ipswich at the weekend, with a huge Champions League encounter with PSG also on the horizon in a week’s time.

The final whistle goes and both sets of players sink to their knees as an absolutely phenomenal match ends 2-2. What a remarkable game of football, and the scenes in the stands are jubilant as the Brentford fans revel in their two-goal comeback.

Oh my word, that is absolutely brilliant from all involved. Brentford break and Schade’s deep cross finds Mbeumo. He keeps his composure, cuts inside and takes the shot, which beats Ortega only for Ake to produce a goal-saving header off the line. Absolutely outstanding defending.

It’s the equaliser for Brentford! A whipped cross is met by a powerful header from Nørgaard, who arrows it toward the top corner. Ortega gets there but can only claw the ball into his own net. 2-2!

There will be five minutes added on at the end of the game. Enough time for more drama?

The Brentford goalkeeper has been outstanding tonight and makes another excellent save. City keep the pressure up though, and substitute McAtee, who is on for the final few minutes for Foden, curls a follow-up effort wide.

City very nearly restore their two-goal advantage as De Bruyne finds a pocket of space on the edge of the box and curls a shot agonisingly wide.

Game on! Brentford build sustained pressure and finally open up City as a dinked cross finds Wissa in acres of space right in front of goal. It’s a second for the visitors and it’s Phil Foden who gets it again. Savinho beats nicks the ball just inside the Brentford half and bears down into the box. His shot is well saved, but Foden is on hand to hammer in the rebound and make it 2-0 to City.

Schade, who’s just come on for Jensen, drags a shot wide of the far post after being set up by Mbeumo. He’d started his run too early though and the offside flag is up.

It’s so close to an equaliser for Brentford as Mbeumo burst onto a ball in behind, getting there ahead of the onrushing Ortega. He rounds the City keeper and squares the ball for Wissa in the middle, but his shot is brilliantly blocked by Ake when it looked almost certain that the forward would score.

That is a goal of the highest quality. City work it out to De Bruyne on the right wing, who whips in the most sumptuous cross that Foden meets with a cushioned volley that picks out the bottom corner. The assist is phenomenal and so is the finish. 1-0.

Damsgaard has the ball in the back of the net with a shot from range, but there was a clear offside in the build up and the flag is up to cut Brentford’s celebrations short.
