West Ham v Brighton LIVE: Premier League updates from final festive fixture

West Ham United held on for a draw against Brighton and Hove Albion at the London Stadium to stay sixth in the Premier League, one place and three points above the south-coast visitors.

The final game of the Premier League’s festive fixture list featured plenty of endeavour and a number of chances, most of which fell to visitors Brighton.

But a combination of wasteful finishing and excellent goalkeeping from Alphonse Areola ensured that the spoils were shared in Stratford, with Brighton recording their first clean sheet of the season in the process.

Both teams were missing key personnel, and it showed at times in a game that lacked spark for long periods.

Yet the result leaves West Ham and Brighton lying sixth and seventh in the table respectively, and well-placed for a push for the European places in the second half of the season.

Gross has failed to convert the biggest chance of the night for Brighton, and has another headed opportunity in a crowded West Ham box. It’s nothing like as straight forward a chance, but his looping header isn’t on target in any case.

Webster is struggling with injury here and is going to have to make way. His withdrawal is part of a double change for Brighton, with Lallana also coming on for Buonanotte.

Benrahma’s hot-and-cold sort of night comes to an end, with Mubama coming on in his place.

Milner looks for the run of Gross, but it’s a tricky ball to bring under control and it runs through to the keeper.

It’s a game that needs a more target sort of striker, and it’s little surprise to see Brighton shuffle their pack, with Ferguson replacing Welbeck.

Brighton continue to look tidy in attacking areas and Hinshelwood rises high at the back post to get on the edge of a dangerous-looking cross. But he can’t get power on the header and it drifts harmlessly across the face of goal.

A Benrahma cross into the box takes a lucky deflection that lands to Soucek at the back post, but he skews his effort wide when it was easier to score. What a let-off for Brighton!

Joao Pedro goes on a brilliant mazy run into the West Ham box, making room for a shot. But his final touch lets him down as he fires straight at Areola. That would have been a superb goal.

Another exciting West Ham move sees Benrahma and Emerson combine, but the latter’s cut-back doesn’t pick out Ward-Prowse on the edge of the box, who was slow to react for the second time in a matter of minutes.

The game has suddenly sparked into life, and this time it’s Brighton who go close, with Areola making a reaction save from Welbeck and Milner firing over the bar from the resulting spell of pressure inside the box.
