Scott McTominay’s impressive display in the win over Leeds United has been described as “one of the best performances I’ve seen and played with on the pitch,” by Manchester United team-mate Harry Maguire.
The first Premier League meeting between the two rivals since 2004 ended in a 6-2 win for the Red Devils, with McTominay playing a starring role with two goals in the opening three minutes.
As well as his goals, Scotland international McTominay produced a commanding performance in the middle of the park - and it certainly impressed England centre-back Maguire.
“You’ve seen in recent months how we’ve been relying on the forward lads in Rash (Marcus Rashford) and Bruno [Fernandes], so for Scott to score was great,” Maguire told the club’s official website. “He was magnificent – one of the best performances I’ve seen and played with on the pitch from a central midfielder.”
The win over Leeds kept United in touch with Premier League leaders Liverpool, and they can move within two points of the Reds if they win their game in hand.
The fine recent form has glossed over their Champions League exit, and has led to talk of a title challenge from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, but Maguire is not getting carried away.
"You can get ahead of yourself in terms of looking at other people’s results and you just need to look after yourself,” he said. “If you keep winning games and putting three points on the table then you’ll be there or thereabouts.
“It’s still early on in the season. I think after three or four games you saw people speaking about how bad our start was and now you hear people saying we’re title challengers. That’s football. We’ve got to deal with that, stick to what we’re doing and keep improving on the training pitch and on the pitch, and see where it takes us.”
