As I said, I find that odd. If Ryan Giggs had been dropped after every stinker, he'd have far fewer appearances. Keep playing your best players and they'll deliver for you.

Per the Manchester Evening News, here's Mourinho explaining his team:

"The thinking is because I am not happy with Mkhi's performance in the last match and Pogba was not ready to play last Saturday, is because after 48 hours he is not in the best of his game so good to have him on the bench to give one more option."

Pogba returns to the squad following a hamstring problem but there is no Antonio Valencia or Wayne Rooney in the matchday party.

Mourinho explained: "Valencia is really, really tired. He come from Ecuador, arrive here, play 90 minutes, was a big effort for him, we need to protect him. Rooney yesterday had pain in both ankles, he couldn't train and he is not available."

Here come the players; the ball has been successfully deplinthed.

BT have just advertised the Champions League quarter-finals; my days, those look tasty, and it's pretty much impossible to predict the final four.

It's beginning to look as though Ibrahimovic might be off. That'd be a tricky one for United - on the one hand, replacing his goals would be a problem; on the other, it might open things up facilitate a more fluid attack.

As for Everton, Ronald Koeman needs to decide what kind of team they are. Do they sit back every time they play a proper team? Or do they back themselves?

"Last time I came second I don't even remember that," says Zlatan. Perhaps he might finish better?

Ah - here he is again, now saying that if he changes his attitude, he'll be a "top, top player".

Rio Ferdinand is giving us a realistic assessment of Romelu Lukaku: "weak when there's no space". I agree. He's a good player, but I don't think his level is that much higher than where he is now.

I wonder if Ronald Koeman will have the stones to have a go tonight; in my irrelevant opinion, that's a decent route to success. United, though they don't concede many, are not all that at the back, and have no running power in midfield, nor much guile.

Everton make two changes following their latest derby capitulation: out go Pennington and Calvert-Lewin; in come Barry and Mirallas.

So, United make three changes from the weekend: Valencia, Mkhitaryan and Martial are out; Blind, Herrera and Ibrahimovic come in.

Valencia, I imagine just needs a rest; I've no idea why Mkhitaryan is out. I say that, but he didn't play well at the weekend, but at the same time, he's been central to what little good football United have played lately. If Ryan Giggs had been dropped every time he'd played badly, well.
