Saints are all over Newcastle and already could be more than a goal to the good. If the visitors don't sort themselves out quickly then this game could be over before they've woken up.
Pellè is bundled over in the box as Southampton whip in another corner, but the referee waves the penalty appeals away.
GOOOAAALLL!!! Shane Long opens the scoring for Southampton, weaving through the Newcastle defence and slotting home. It's a classy, classy goal by the returning forward, although he wasn't met with much resistance.
Southampton carve out the first chance of the game from a corner. Nobody picks up Van Dijk from a corner and the defender's header is flicked goalwards by Pellè. It's a comfortable save, but that was shambolic defending by Newcastle
Southampton get the game underway, kitted out in their usual red and white striped shirts. Newcastle are in their dark blue change kit.
Here's a reminder of today's teams:
Southampton: Forster, Cuco Martina, Van Dijk, Fonte, Bertrand; Wanyama, Tadic, Clasie, Mané; Long, Pellè. Subs: Rodriguez, Austin, Yoshida, Soares, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Stekelenburg.
Newcastle: Darlow; Anita, Mbemba, Taylor, Janmaat; Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Shelvey, Townsend; Perez, Mitrovic. Subs: Cisse, Tiote, De Jong, Obertan, Dummett, Lascelles, Woodman.
You can always rely on Mike Ashley for some comical timing, but the club announcing a profit of £32.4m for the last financial year has not been greeted warmly by the beleaguered supporters.
Southampton may have failed to halt Leicester last weekend, but the Saints have had a decent season. Ronald Koeman's side are in the mix for the European places and could even catch the likes of West Ham and Manchester United with a strong finish to the season.
Rafa Benitez has had a positive impact on Newcastle in terms of performances, but he's not a miracle worker. This is a squad with serious problems, not least commitment to the cause. If some of the players don't even seem concerned about relegation, then it really is time for the fans to get worried.
Mathematically this isn't a must-win for Newcastle, but the Magpies are six points from safety (albeit with a game in hand) and are in danger of being left stranded.
