The final whistle goes and the Southampton fans applaud a comfortable victory. Newcastle remain six points from safety and relying on the teams above them to slip up, but on the evidence of today's display there is little hope for Rafa Benitez's side. At St Mary's it finishes Southampton 3, Newcastle 1.

Mitrovic finds the back of the net, but he was comfortably offside.

Romeu heads wide as the Saints players queue up to add a fourth. The chances of a Newcastle comeback have all-but disappeared.

Southampton are still looking to add to their three-goal tally and Ward-Prowse almost manages to play in Rodriguez. Now that would have been a special moment.

Wanyama and Romeu both have cracks from distance, but the first is blocked and the second flies well wide.

Mané chips a cross towards Pellè at the back stick, but Anita clears over the bar.

Tadic goes off and on comes Jay Rodriguez after his lengthy injury absence. The cheer from the crowd is as loud as for any of the goals.

If Newcastle do manage to rescue something from this game then it will be Townsend who is responsible. He's been a breath of fresh air since half-time.

De Jong almost turns Townsend's excellent delivery home, but glances his effort wide of the far post.

Townsend wins a free-kick by the corner flag for Newcastle. A goal now would really spice things up.

Benitez urges his players forward. This game is not over yet, not quite anyway.

Clasie is replaced by Romeu for Southampton for the final quarter of an hour.

Mané breaks and makes space for himself to take a shot on from just inside the box. His effort curls beyond Darlow, but also fractionally wide of the far post.

Martina is hobbling after being caught late by Cisse, but looks like he'll be fine to continue.

Forster comes out and claims a lofted cross into the box. Newcastle have at least got into the final third with semi-regularity in this second half.

The clock ticks over to 70 minutes. Surely Newcastle can't get back into this? That Townsend goal has given the Magpies hope, but it's virtually the only positive thing they've done all game.
