Van Dijk very nearly makes amends in spectacular fashion. The centre-back finds himself on the ball in the final third for some unspecified reason, but he takes advantage with a beautiful turn and a thunderous strike that crashes against the crossbar. What a strike!
That Delph goal came after Davis had got away with what looked like a hand-ball on the line to tip a shot around the post. On another day that could easily have been a red card and a penalty.
GOOOAAALLL!!! Fabian Delph scores, courtesy of a massive deflection off the heel of Van Dijk. 2-0 City.
Aguero and De Bruyne link up brilliantly to open up Southampton, but the striker unselfishly stays on his feet when most would have gone down inside the box and the result is a corner. That was great to see from Aguero.
Kolarov whips a cross in from the left, but it's over the head of Aguero at the back post and Southampton have a chance to catch their breath.
The full-back curls his effort towards the far corner, but it's blocked and flies behind for a corner. Southampton deal with the second set-piece, but still City pour forward. This is relentless.
City win a free-kick in a very dangerous position as Otamendi jinks past Romeu on the edge of the box and invites the foul. It's Kolarov again who seems favourite to hit it, but Toure and De Bruyne are there too.
Southampton very nearly gift City a second. The ball is needlessly given away in central midfield and Aguero is played clean through on goal, but Stekelenburg comes flying off his line to make a great save.
That all came from a horrible Yoshida mistake. The full-back tried to take on Sterling with no cover behind him and was left apologising to his team-mates after giving the ball away and essentially gifting the hosts their first goal.
GOOOAAALLL!!! Kevin de Bruyne opens the scoring for Manchester City, poking home from close range after Sterling won the ball on the left, burst into the box and put it on a plate for the Belgian.1-0 City!
This has been an excellent start by City, who were so sluggish in the opening exchanges a week ago.
Kolarov curls a beautiful left-footed shot towards the top corner, but Stekelenburg makes the save and then gathers the loose ball as both Otamendi and Fernandinho lunge in. Both City players ended up tangled in the back of the net.
Southampton are being pretty physical, with both Yaya Toure and Aguero left on the ground after late tackles. Both are okay to continue and City have a free-kick in a dangerous position. Kolarov and De Bruyne are standing over it...
It's been all City in the opening exchanges. Fernandinho has a shot from distance blocked, but back City come.
Southampton also make a complete hash of clearing their box after Sterling tests the reflexes of Stekelenburg with an early shot. The keeper can only parry and he is perilously close to picking up a back pass as it is played back to him on the floor. Thankfully he realises the danger at the last possible moment and pulls his hands away.
Southampton get the game underway, kitted out in their usual red and white stripes. City are in sky blue and white as normal.
It's cold and wet in Manchester, which comes as little surprise at this time of the year.
Kick-off is just five minutes away.
