This is the first start for Luuk de Jong, Kinnear's folly, up front for Newcastle. There is no replacement for Yohan Cabaye due to the other Kinnear folly, namely not signing anyone on a permanent basis. Davide Santon appears to be playing in midfield according to the teamsheet, which rather makes a point that Pardew has been left a little short.

John Terry misses his first Premier League match in yonks as he has a minor muscle strain that meant it wasn't worth risking him. That means Luiz in defence, which can sometimes lead to a fairly amusing development on the pitch.

Pardew commenting, with a minor difference of opinion, commenting on an opinion that Mourinho doesn't really have, but says for the sake of saying something, anything to fill the void at the heart of the media. It's one hell of a carousel and you wouldn't get my fingers off it without extensive enhanced interrogation techniques.

Alan Pardew: "I don't believe that [Chelsea are not in the title race] for one minute - and I think deep down, nor does Jose... You have to defend well. They (Chelsea) need to find a way, and nine times out of 10, they do... We all want to see the game played on an even field, end-to-end, but you have to be careful when you are coming up against players of the quality he (Mourinho) has. He moans that he doesn't have this and that, but he's got plenty."

Jose Mourinho pretty much admits that press conferences and post-match interviews should never be taken at face value, and don't ever have to be true or taken as such. If other people could start to learn that lessono then that would make the discourse around football far more edifying. As it is we're stuck with death threats and constant, tiring outrage. Still, there you have it.
