Harper comes out to clear a through ball but is scythed down by Beckford – who has up until now been anonymous. The former Leeds man receives a yellow card for the indiscretion. Harper looks to be in trouble.

And Howard follows that up with another sensational save. Having turned Baines inside out, Nolan’s cross takes a deflection off the head of Heitinga and is looping over the big American, who manages to re-arrange his feet and tip it over for another corner.

Howard plucks the former England international’s free-kick out of the top corner – great save.

Everton look lethargic. And having been comfortably beaten by Routledge, Fellaini brings down the diminutive winger. Newcastle free-kick, left of centre, twenty five yards out. Barton over it.

Newcastle are first to absolutely everything here. Barton and Tiote have now assumed control in the middle and with wingers like Ben Arfa and Routledge, the visitors look a threat. Another corner. Barton hits it long to the back post but Carroll can only head it wide.

A better delivery this time yields a corner following the intervention of Distin. Barton swings it over but Fellaini clears - only as far as Routledge though, whose horrible skewed effort draws ironic cheers from the home faithful.

Following a strong start from the home side, the visitors have done well to soak that pressure and are now causing problems themselves. Barton over another free-kick.

A flash of brilliance from Ben Arfa almost brings Newcastle the lead. The winger cuts in from the left, skips past Hibbert and Jagielka, before slipping Nolan through on goal but the former Bolton man went a fraction too early.

Barton nicks the ball from Arteta and breaks but an errant pass from Carroll brings the move to an end.

Everton’s more measured composed approach has, on balance, produced more chances thus far but the dynamic visitors continue to look dangerous.

Poor delivery and Fellaini easily clears.

Pienaar has a pop shot from distance now but it is easily dealt with by Harper. Ben Arfa breaks and wins a free-kick. Barton over it…

Jagielka rises highest but darts his header just the wrong side of Steve Harper’s post. Chances a plenty thus far.

Tiote makes a solid challenge just inside his own half before surging forward. The home side’s defence continues to back off the Ivorian and he takes up the invitation to shoot, but it is tame.

Newcastle threatening more now but again Routledge’s cross is too deep. Promising stuff, though.

Williamson was a whisker away from a Ben Arfa free-kick there but he was well marshalled by Fellaini at the back post.

Fellaini is adjudged to have fouled Williamson at the back post with the Toffees beginning to menace.

Chance!! Jose Enrique’s cross is marginally too high for Carroll but Routledge gets his head to it. Although he catches it cleanly enough, it never threatens the goal of Howard.

The pace has slowed a little now – Everton still in the ascendancy.

Routledge wins the ball well and exchanges passes with Carroll before over hitting his cross.
