Lionel Messi and Inter Miami opened their 2025 campaign on a desperately cold night in Kansas City on Wednesday evening.
Despite temperatures that at one point dropped to -16 degrees Celsius, Messi produced the game’s defining moment to see Miami edge past Sporting KC in the first leg of the opening round of the Concacaf Champions Cup.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner plucked the ball out of the air while under pressure, beat the surrounding defenders before finishing from an acute angle to score the only goal of the game.
Miami will take the 1-0 lead back to Fort Lauderdale for the second leg next week, a game that will take place days after the Florida outfit kick off their Major League Soccer season against New York City FC this weekend.
Ahead of the new campaign, we decided to look at what the season may have in store for Messi and Co.

The latter, which Miami claimed last term, is given to the team with the best overall record in the MLS regular season.
Meanwhile, the MLS Cup is the culmination of the play-off system and pits the winner of the Eastern Conference Final against the winner of the Western Conference Final. Indeed, the MLS Cup winner earns the title of league champion.
Last term, Miami fell to a shocking first round exit in the MLS Cup playoffs, losing to Atlanta United in a best-of-three series.
The other two trophies at Messi’s disposal are the Leagues Cup, a tournament contested between MLS sides and clubs from Mexico’s Liga MX, and the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup.
The latter, which is an expansion of the previous annual version of the tournament, will feature the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr and be played across the US.
Elsewhere, with Argentina Messi is also on course to win the second-ever Finalissima as the Copa America 2024 winners take on Euro 2024 champions Spain.
