Kroos was one of those players who looked to be finished at Real Madrid at the end of last season. However, just like Marcelo and Modric he has come back this season refreshed.

The home supporters want a yellow card for Kroos after the German midfielder bundled into Wakaso, but he was going for the ball and the referee rightly keeps his cards in his pocket.

Alaves win the ball high up the press after winning it from Militao, but the Real Madrid defender makes a good recovery and gets away with it. Alaves are forcing the visitors into mistakes.

A rocket from Casemiro! That's the first time Pacheco has been really tested! The ball fell nicely to Casemiro 20 yards out, he caught it well, but the Alaves goalkeeper makes the strong diving save.

Benzema couldn't guide it on target! The French striker moved the ball on to his left foot and attempted to test Pacheco with a curling shot, but he curls his shot wide of the far post.

Areola and Militao aren't usually first choice players for Real Madrid, but this back four has done a decent job against a very energetic and difficult-to-deal-with Alaves frontline.

This has been an entertaining encounter, it has been played at a good tempo, but we are still waiting for the first clearcut goalscoring opportunity. Both sides struggling to create.

Modric becomes the first Real Madrid player to be shown a yellow for a foul on Duarte.

ISCO... straight at Pacheco! A quick throw in released Benzema in behind the Alaves defence, he flicked the ball back to Isco, but his shot from just inside the box was straight at the goalkeeper.

Real Madrid just went asleep there for a moment as a ball spun high into the air inside the box. Martin was alert to the opportunity, though, but could only send his shot into the side netting.

Deflected wide! Joselu takes aim from outside the box and his effort picks up a deflection, flashing wide of the far post. Perez is furious that he wasn't played the pass instead.

The inclusion of Bale certainly gives Real Madrid more presence from corner and freekicks. The Welshman gives them an aerial threat that they don't have with Rodrygo or Hazard.

Bale at the back post! Real Madrid looked to have wasted a corner kick opportunity by playing it short, but Marcelo played the deep ball for the back post and Bale could only guide into Pacheco's gloves on the stretch.

Alaves have been very effective in keeping Benzema quiet in this first half. The French striker has been in exceptional form for Real Madrid of late, but he has hardly had a sniff so far.

He couldn't control it! The ball was played to the back post for Perez, it was always going to be difficult to bring down, but he did his best and then fired a shot across goal. Areola saves.

Real Madrid looked to be building up a head of steam, but Alaves have done a good job of pushing the visitors back again and they are even enjoying some possession themselves.

Marcelo is another Real Madrid player who has enjoyed something of a renaissance of late. The Brazilian looked as good as finished at the end of last season, but he has found form again.
