In the first half Atletico Madrid were quite happy to allow Espanyol possession in the own half, but they aren't even affording them that now. The away team are hanging on a bit.

Vietto really needs to impress tonight, given his struggles so far this season, but that chance will take a while to forget. The ball did come to him fast, but he still should have scored.

ATLETICO MADRID SHOULD HAVE FOUND THE NET! Griezmann has a shot from about six yards out smothered, then Vietto blazes over the rebound with the goal gaping and empty.

Atletico Madrid have started the second half strongly. They were perhaps guilty of not pressing the matter enough in the final third, but they are certainly doing that now. Espanyol holding on.

Luis is allowed to drive and drive, and find a way into the Espanyol penalty area. He takes the shot from a tight angle but is finally closed down by Alvarez, who makes the block.

Of course, Atletico Madrid have allowed one-goal leads to slip previously this season. They are still a strong defensive unit, but there is a precedent there for Espanyol to cling to.

Espanyol are a dangerous side, having won five of their last six Liga matches, but they have been completely nullified in this match so far. They need to find a way to make the ball stick in attack.

Atletico Madrid were comfortably the better team in the first half, but Simeone will want his side to be more productive in the final third. They need the second goal to make things certain.

Vietto has dropped out of this game. Griezmann is drifting all over the place, out wide, into the midfield and driving forward, but the Argentine forward is struggling to find his place.

This hasn't been a very fruitful half in front of goal for either side. Atletico Madrid have been the better side, comfortably, but they haven't created a great deal in the final third.

This is very young Atletico Madrid team now that Tiago is off the pitch, and yet they still look so assured in possession. They are in control of the game, despite their lack of years.
