One player who has struggled somewhat to get into the game is Jese. The 20 year old has been in great form for Real Madrid recently but he's been quiet. That's not to say he's played poorly, just hasn't seen a lot of the ball.

Di Maria at the centre of midfield is a really interesting study. It's the kind of thing that you would think would never work but since Ancelotti started playing him there he has been very impressive.

Real Madrid are looking very good right now. They may have been given too relatively cheap goals but the home side have been the better of the two teams by quite some distance in this opening 30 minutes.

Bale cuts inside off the right wing, where has been playing all game, and swings a left leg at the ball but this time he fails to make a significant connection and Musacchio can get his foot in to make the challenge.

What a chance! Giovani works a good position on the edge of the box and draws Carvajal across from his right back position. But with Pereira in loads of space Giovani puts far too much on his simple pass and the chance is gone.

Modric is playing well too. Is he the best all-round central midfielder in La Liga at the moment? He's now one of the first names on Ancelotti's teamsheet. He's very impressive in that position.

Bale is really enjoying this. With Ronaldo out he is the marquee player for Real Madrid tonight and he knows he has the better of his marker, Costa. I can see him scoring at least one more.

Benzema and Bale link up on the edge of the box but when the ball falls to the Welsh winger 25 yards he takes a shot, which he meets brilliantly, But for all the power behind it the effort is straight at Asenjo.

That was too easy for Real Madrid. Villarreal look unusually weak at the back tonight, although it's not every week they face a team of Real Madrid's potency.

GOAL! Real Madrid 4 (24 mins - Karim Benzema) Villarreal 0. Benzema gets in at the near post to turn home Bale's low cross into the box. The pass may actually have taken a touch off Costa.

As good as Illarramendi is you still get the feeling that Real Madrid miss Xabi Alonso in the centre of midfield. He's arguably the best in his position in Europe. Any team would feel his absence.

Villarreal win a corner on the left side but after a spot of screwball scramble in the box the ball is cleared. Real Madrid tend to be quite good at defending set pieces, but they looked a little shaky there.

Diego Lopez is tested for the first time tonight, diving low down to his left to save from Edu Ramos. Everyone was backing off the Villarreal midfielder so he decided to hit an effort from 25 yards.

Indeed Ancelotti makes the change and it's a straight swap, with Coentrao coming on to replace the injured Marcelo. That shouldn't disrupt Real Madrid's system too much, if at all.

Real Madrid sub: Marcelo OFF, Fabio Coentrao ON.

Marcelo is still off the field of play and is talking to the club's medical staff. It looks like the fullback is coming off.

Villarreal have come back into the contest in the last few minutes. Bruno is starting to dictate their attacking moves from a deep role in the centre of midfield. I think this game might still have goals in it, for both teams.
15'
Marcelo is getting treatment for an injury after a collision with Aquino. Looks like he's pulled a groin injury. The Brazilian is struggling here. I reckon we could be about to see an early change.

Real Madrid are the form team in La Liga at the moment. It wasn't that long ago that they were trailing Barcelona and Atletico Madrid by five points but they've taken 32 out of the last 36 points on offer. They can go top tonight.
