Manchester United v Aston Villa live: Anthony Martial starts as United try to avenge last weekend's Premier League loss

Is that united only have one winger. This doesn't look like a team, more a collection of players the manager hopes can do enough to get a result.

United have missed him, badly. Partly that's because they don't have any other workable centre-forward - Ronaldo is finished and Rashford isn't good enough in that role - but Martial can hold the ball up, the main quality the team have been missing, but can also run in behind and finish (if he's fit and focused).

Ronaldo is, apparently, ill, and Ten Hag can't say if he'll play at the weekend. He wasn't happy with United's weekend performance, but is happy to have Martial back, who had a good pre-season and fit well into the style he wants the team to play.

A 4-3-1-2. That's a pretty decent tactics against this United: they'll be hard to penetrate with that blanket in front of the back four, and those two strikers will be a handful for Maguire and Lindelof, neither of whom have much pace or strength. They will, though, be relying heavily on their full-backs for width.

They really do have a lot of good players. I think Emery can do something decent with them, and is a really good get.

Unai Emery leaves out Emi Martinez, Matty Cash, Tyrone Mings, Lucas Digne, Leander Dendoncker, Emi Buendia and Leon Bailey. In come Robin Olsen, Ashley Young, Calum Chambers, Ludwig Augustinsson, Boubacar Kamara, John McGinn and Danny Ings.

Donny van de Beek keeps his place. I've not a clue why, he's played poorly, is too slow and generally unathletic for the Premier League - he's not had a good game in more than two seasons - and playing him means Bruno Fernandes, United's best player, is compromised, forced onto the right wing. I'm surprised because I thought they'd be going all-out to win this trophy.

Erik ten Hag rests David de Gea, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Alejandro Garnacho and Ronaldo, who's not in the squad; they're replaced by Martin Dubravka, making his Old Trafford debut, Harry Maguire, Fred, Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial.
