MOUNT MAGIC SEALS MANCHESTER UNITED'S PLACE IN EUROPA LEAGUE FINAL
Mason Mount turned in a superb cameo from the bench to propel Manchester United to a 4-1 win over Athletic Club, sealing their place in the UEFA Europa League final with a 7-1 aggregate triumph.
Mount netted his first home goal as a United player when he curled in a brilliant equaliser in the 72nd minute on Thursday, cancelling out Mikel Jauregizar’s stunning first-half opener.
United’s first goal opened the floodgates against an Athletic team without key attackers Oihan Sancet, Nico Williams and Inaki Williams, and Casemiro soon netted a second as he turned Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick in off his shoulder.
Mount fittingly had the final say, though, drilling in a long-range strike from close to the left-hand touchline after cutting out a poor clearance from Athletic goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala.
Ruben Amorim’s team will face fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in a mouthwatering final in Bilbao on May 21.

'I’M STRESSED ALREADY'
Ruben Amorim has been speaking to TNT Sports.
"It’s the least we can do for these fans, for all the support they have given us in this tough season. But I’m stressed already because of the final! If you don’t win it, in the end it means nothing. We need to win it.
"The team should be better, I should be better in this moment, but we are trying. We have done quite well in Europe, but struggled a lot in the Premier League.
"We did not have energy [in the first half], but Amad [Diallo] gave us the energy. Mason Mount, I’m so happy for. He’s such a good player, he works really hard, he has such quality.
"Sometimes, we have games where we are just surviving, but with more options, this helps us to win games.
"It’s important for every player but when you see that kind of guy [like Mount] working hard every day, eating well, resting, ice bath, he does everything. When you have this kind of player, you just want to help them."

INSTANT REACTION
Mason Mount has been speaking to TNT Sports.
On his performance and injury troubles: "It’s been difficult since I’ve been here, I’ve had injuries, setbacks. I’ve always stayed positive, I knew something good was going to come. I’ve carried on going, tonight it’s paid off in a semi-final. We knew it was going to be difficult, but getting our first goal calmed us down a bit. I carried on going, working hard in training every day, trying to stay positive, and when I’ve had the opportunity to come on, just tried to make an impact. It was a tight game when I came on, along with the other subs, so I just tried to come on and have an impact.
On his second goal: "As I saw the goalkeeper come out, I had in my head that if it comes to me, first touch and shoot. I just tried to get good contact, get it on target. The same with the first one, it was just instinct. Create half-a-yard and hit the back of the net."
On the final and Old Trafford crowd: "The crowd’s been unbelievable. They’ve stuck with us. For me, it’s my first goals at Old Trafford. To go back to Bilbao, it’s a special moment."

FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 4-1 ATHLETIC CLUB (7-1 AGG)
Mason Mount's brilliant cameo has helped United see off Athletic and, with a rampant second-half performance, claim their place in the Europa League final in style.
United were under the cosh for over an hour, with Jauregizar having put Athletic ahead in the first half.
But then, substitute Mount restored parity with a sublime finish before Casemiro and Hojlund made it 3-1.
And fittingly, Mount had the final say with an exceptional long-range strike.

GOAL!! MAN UTD 4-1 ATHLETIC CLUB (7-1 AGG) (MOUNT)
Oh. My. Word. Mason Mount – take a bow!
He's the Player of the Match, no doubt about it, and he has just capped it off with a sensational goal.
Agirrezabala gets his clearance all wrong, sending it straight to Mount just inside Athletic's half. The former Chelsea man takes a touch and then unleashes a sizzling left-footed strike that soars over a defender and into the back of a gaping net!

GOAL!! MAN UTD 3-1 ATHLETIC CLUB (6-1 AGG) (HOJLUND)
Goal for Hojlund! That's brilliant!
Amad does all the work, getting to the byline with some slick footwork before supplying the drilled pas into the six-yard box, where Hojlund is on hand to backheel it home and round out the victory.
He and Amad then go and grab a phone from the crowd and take a selfie - as is the trend now, apparently!

MOUNT MAGIC
A superb flicked pass from Mount sets Amass away. If he'd just got his head up, he could have picked out Hojlund, but instead he hesitated, and the chance goes begging.

GOAL!! MAN UTD 2-1 ATHLETIC CLUB (5-1 AGG) (CASEMIRO)
There's the goal that puts United ahead, and they are cruising to Bilbao now!
Fernandes whips in a free-kick from the right, and Casemiro meets it at the near post. He stoops and flicks it home.
In fact, it came off his shoulder, but that does not matter for United. They lead 2-1 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate!

WHAT A MOMENT FOR MOUNT
It has been such a frustrating time for Mount since he moved to United in 2023, but that could just be his big moment in a red shirt – and could it be the moment that turns his Red Devils career around?
United are surely heading to the final now, and they'll have a chance to salvage silverware – and Champions League football – from this dismal season.
