Crystal Palace v Liverpool result – Community Shield win for Eagles as Justin Devenny nets stunning penalty in Wembley shoot-out

Crystal Palace downed Premier League champions Liverpool 3-2 on penalties to win the Community Shield after a 2-2 draw at Wembley.

Justin Devenny was Palace’s match-winner as he slammed home the final penalty in a shoot-out in which Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott all fluffed their lines for Liverpool.

The Reds twice went ahead in normal time on Sunday, with new signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong on target inside the opening 21 minutes - either side of Jean-Philippe Mateta converting from the penalty spot after Virgil van Dijk's foul on Ismaila Sarr.

Yet a resurgent Palace deservedly equalised through Sarr in the 77th minute, with Liverpool fortunate not to concede a penalty when Mac Allister handled in the box.

Oliver Glasner’s team, though, kept up their momentum in the shoot-out. Dean Henderson made two big saves, setting the stage for Devenny, on as a late substitute for the injured Marc Guehi, to fire home the winning spot-kick and send the Eagles fans into raptures.

Elliott's penalty is really weak, and it's a simple enough stop for Henderson. Now, Palace have the chance to win it with this next kick...

That's cool and composed from Sarr, who makes it 2-1 Palace with a lovely, curled finish into the right-hand corner.

It's 1-1 in the shoot-out as Gakpo slams home, giving Henderson no chance.

That's a really poor attempt from Eze, who stuttered and staggered in his run-up, and Alisson tips it onto the post.

Alisson looked like he was off his line, but there will be no re-take, with the VAR having confirmed the onfield decision that the goalkeeper had not enroached.

What a stop from Henderson! Just like he did at Wembley against Man City back in May, the Palace goalkeeper saves from the spot, as he lunges to the left to palm away Mac Allister's effort. Another missed penalty for the Reds!

No mistake from Mateta as, just like in the first half, he puts his spot-kick away. Palace lead the shoot-out 1-0.

Oh my word! It has not been a good day at the office for Salah, and he has just sliced his spot-kick way over the crossbar.

And it's Salah who will get the shoot-out under way.

That second half belonged to Palace, and the Eagles can consider themselves unfortunate not to have been awarded a spot-kick for that handball by Mac Allister.

Now, Liverpool will get the chance to prove their credentials as the country's best team by shaking off that poor second-half display and winning the Community Shield in the shoot-out, but Palace know an upset is within their grasp.

Devenny, just on as a sub, very nearly wins it for Palace with his first touch, sending a side-footed finish just wide from 18 yards out. That was close!
