GAKPO SCORES BUT SUFFERS DEFEAT ON PSV RETURN AS LIVERPOOL STILL FINISH TOP
Liverpool finished top of the UEFA Champions League group stage despite seeing their perfect record in the competition come to an end in a topsy-turvy 3-2 loss at PSV Eindhoven.
Arne Slot left no fewer than 12 first-team regulars on Merseyside, but the much-changed visitors still led twice in the first half through Cody Gakpo’s penalty and Harvey Elliott’s rebound.
However, Johan Bakayoko and Ismael Saibari both levelled before Ricardo Pepi flicked the Dutch champions into the lead on the stroke of half-time.
There was little to shout about in a second half that did not carry the same entertainment value, although the visitors did finish the game with 10 men when 18-year-old Amara Nallo was shown a straight red card within moments of appearing as a substitute.
The result sees Liverpool finish top of the standings and will now look forward to a last 16 tie with the first leg scheduled for March 4/5.
PSV, who finish 14th after securing a first win over Liverpool and extended their unbeaten home run to 54 matches, head into a two-legged play-off set for February 11/12 and 18/19.

TNT SPORTS EXPERTS REACT TO A YOUNG LIVERPOOL SIDE SUFFERING DEFEAT
JOE COLE: "Job done. They finished top of the league. The young players equipped themselves very well tonight.
"It’s a game in isolation and I just think it’s onwards and upwards for Liverpool. No problem and a massive game on Saturday. The attention for Arne Slot will already be turning to that.
"It's defeat here, but the young lads did themselves justice tonight."

PETER CROUCH: "You’d expect Liverpool to get a result against Tottenham (in the League Cup), certainly at home, (second leg) and they have a favourable draw in the fA cup. They are top of the group in the Champions League and in the Premier League, so it doesn’t get much better for Liverpool.
"I know they lost the game tonight, but they got minutes into young players that will serve them well for the future."
