TRUBIN STAYS ALERT
A deflected cross from Diatta spins towards the bottom corner but Benfica keeper Trubin was alert to the danger and makes a comfortable save in the end.

BIG CHANCE
A corner is met by the towering Silva, who should do better with a free header that he angles wide of the target. A second on the night for Benfica really would leave Monaco with a mountain to climb.

THE HEAVENS OPEN
Just seconds after that opening goal there was a sudden and dramatic change in the condition in Lisbon, with extremely heavy rain falling. Even the referee looks a little bit startled by the sudden deluge. Play continues on the slick surface.

GOAL! BENFICA 1-0 AS MONACO (AKTÜRKOGLU)
The hosts press high and win the ball in the final third. Pavlidis does superbly to jink around two defenders and whip the ball across the box to pick out the run of Kerem Aktürkoglu, who fires home a first-time finish. It’s against the run of play but that makes it 1-0 on the night and 2-0 on aggregate.

LACK OF CUTTING EDGE
A deflection very nearly falls for a Monaco forward in the box, but the players leave it for each other and Benfica scramble it away. It really feels like a goal is coming, but as it stands Benfica remain ahead in this tie.

THREAT ON THE BREAK
Pavlidis very nearly opens Monaco up on the counter with an excellent pass that is so close to being picked up by the on-rushing Schjelderup.

BEN SEGHIR SHOOTS WIDE
Monaco pour forward again and Ben Seghir has a speculative effort from outside of the box that drifts wide of the far post.

SHOULD BE 1-0
A teasing cross drifts narrowly over the head of its intended target Emoblo, but Diatta is also up in the box and has a terrific chance to shoot from a tight angle, only to be denied by a save from the onrushing Trubin. The keeper had very little idea about that, but did well to make himself big and then got slightly fortunate as the ball deflected off him and flew across the face of goal to safety.

NO PENALTY!
Embolo goes down in the box after being played through and claims for a penalty but the referee says no. VAR does check it, but the on-field decision stands. The visitors are not happy.

CHANCE FOR BENFICA
A free-kick is whipped into the box and it is flicked on by Pavlidis. There’s very little time for a reaction to the second ball and it deflects straight into the arms of a grateful Majecki.

THE TEAMS’ DOMESTIC FORM
Benfica are once again in the domestic title race and they closed the gap at the top of the Liga Portugal to just two points at the weekend, winning 1-0 at Santa Clara as Sporting dropped points at home to Arouca.
Monaco have had a patchy season but are firmly in the mix for a top-three finish. They are currently fourth, level on points with third-placed Nice but 16 points off runaway league leaders PSG. They were aided by an eight-minute red card for Nantes in their fixture at the weekend, which helped set up a 7-1 hammering, with Mika Biereth bagging a hat-trick.

HOW THEY GOT TO THE PLAY-OFF ROUND
Based on the league phase, this is the most evenly-matched of all of the Champions League play-off ties, with Benfica and Monaco having finished their eight-game stretch level on points, separated by just one position based on the Portuguese side’s superior goal difference. Both teams won four, drew one and lost three of their league games to finish 16th and 17th respectively.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
The visitors are able to start Morocco international Eliesse Ben Seghir who should offer some creative spark to the attack, with striker Mika Biereth slotting onto the bench. Ben Seghir and Breel Embolo will likely shoulder a lot of the attacking responsibility for Monaco.
Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis has been one of the standout strikers in the Champions League this season, bagging six goals in the competition so far. He will hope for space in the final third if the game opens up.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE FIRST LEG?
Benfica picked up a 1-0 win away in Monaco last week but will be frustrated not to have earned a greater advantage from a match in which they out-shot their French opponents 23-6.
A terrific finish from Vangelis Pavlidis early in the second half gave the visitors the lead before Monaco’s hopes of a comeback were hit when Al-Musrati was sent off on 52 minutes, shown a second yellow after gesturing for the referee to book a Benfica player..
