VILLA DOMINATE BRUGGE TO BOOK PSG QUARTER-FINAL
Aston Villa breezed into their first European Cup quarter-final since 1982, as, holding a 3-1 lead from the first leg, they hammered Club Brugge 3-0 at Villa Park, with Marco Asensio the star of the show.
The visitors started the better of the two sides, with Hans Vanaken having their best chance, a flicked header that went well wide of the post.
After that early pressure, their hopes of overturning a two-goal deficit from the first leg took a huge blow when Kyriani Sabbe was sent off for bringing down Marcus Rashford, who was through on goal.
Yet even with 10 men, Nicky Hayen’s side more than held their own before the break, with Villa having to wait until injury time for their best chance, which Rashford flashed into the side netting.
After the break, goalkeeper Simon Mignolet denied Tyrone Mings, but he was powerless to stop substitute Marco Asensio swivelling and finding the top corner 50 minutes in.
The midfielder missed another chance shortly afterwards, hitting the post after running onto a through ball, before Ian Maatsen made it 2-0 by converting from Morgan Rogers’ cross.
The floodgates were open by now, and Asensio doubled his tally from the night when sweeping home Rashford’s pass to round off a comprehensive display and victory.
It secures a last-eight tie against French side PSG.

VILLA 'LUCKY TO HAVE' ASENSIO - McGINN
"It's mad. It's been a lot of years of hard work. Tonight, we let ourselves down in the first half, but they're a good side. They showed that, even when they were down to ten men, they were the better side.
"We regrouped at half-time. We're lucky to have Marco to come off the bench and put a performance in like that.
"The second half was brilliant, and over two legs, we deserved to go through."
