Monaco v Aston Villa live - UEFA Champions League reaction after Villa fall to 1-0 defeat

Wilfried Singo's early goal gave Monaco a 1-0 win over Aston Villa which revitalised their hopes of a top-eight UEFA Champions League finish and hurt Unai Emery's team's.

The defender reacted first after Emi Martinez could only parry a header straight up in the air at a corner to give Monaco an eighth-minute lead they never relinquished.

Ollie Watkins, who started with Jhon Duran on the bench, had Villa's best chance just before the interval but shot too close to Radoslaw Majecki when played through on goal, allowing the Pole to tip wide.

Villa were well below their best and struggled to open up a Monaco side who had won just one of their last eight games in all competitions - and that was against sixth-tier, amateur opposition.

Both teams now have 13 points, but Villa the better goal difference, ahead of the final round of matches. Villa host Celtic while Monaco must travel to Milan to play Inter.

The top eight teams will receive a bye into the round of 16.

Joe Cole: "They're learning on the job, Villa - these are tough games. I don't think it's the end of the story for them. Their campaign will largely come down to what they do at home. Villa Park is rocking."

Joleon Lescott: "It shows you that this is the Champions League and any slight errors can be punished. That was the case tonight. I don't think Villa played terribly, I thought they were very one-dimensional in regards to their attack and that was surprising."

Alan Hutton: "I think they missed a big opportunity tonight. I don't think that was them at their best. It very much reminded me of the Bruges game, the 1-0 game where they didn't really create anything much going forward... I think when Villa play their best is when they play through the lines and they get the likes of Rogers and Ramsey and people like that on the ball. It didn't quite happen for them tonight.

A massive win for Monaco and a missed opportunity for Villa. Singo's early goal from a corner is the difference and both teams now have 13 points, as the race for top-eight finishes heats up.

Martinez pumps it forward, Monaco win the first header and then Akliouche wins a soft free-kick.

Duran tries an overhead kick with the ball allowed to bounce in the Monaco box, but shoots over.

He did not do much, but it will waste more valuable time.

Golovin works an opening on his left foot, but in doing so closes the angle and shoots wide.

Rogers and Buendia - easily Villa's two best attack-minded players tonight - are replaced by Bogarde and Ramsey. Rogers' number of dribbles has certainly gone up here.
