RICE AND MERINO GIVE GUNNERS DOMINANT FIRST-LEG LEAD
Two astounding free-kicks from Declan Rice, in 12 second-half minutes – along with a fine finish from Mikel Merino – gave Arsenal a commanding lead to take to the Bernabeu on a wild night at the Emirates. The holders cannot be discounted, but they were devastated by The Gunners' second-half performance, unable to live with their hosts' pace, power and enterprise.
The first half was relatively even, both sides creating half-chances without looking likely to score. But Arsenal flew at Madrid after the break and, on 58 minutes, Rice bent a beauty around the outside of the wall to put Arsenal in front. Then, shortly afterwards, the Arsenal man – before tonight, without a free-kick goal in a career spanning more than 300 games – had two in 12 minutes, sending a shot of equal venom far into the top corner.
Arsenal might have settled for what they had, but they did not, Merino curling a lovely finish from the edge of the box into the far corner to put them three goals in front. And in the closing stages, they looked more likely to add a fourth than the shell-shocked champions did to snatch a livener, ending a night for ages in almost total control, as Eduardo Camavinga received a second yellow card late on.
But as John Toshack famously said, "Ninety minutes in the Bernabeu is a long time." All the more so in this competition. This tie is not yet over.

    FREE-KICKS WERE IN RICE'S LOCKER
The former says the manager said they needed to be convinced they could win and they were. On his free-kicks, he says they've been in the locker, but he's been hitting walls or over the bar; this one, he was going to cross it, then he saw the gap and went for it. He doesn't want to be cliched and in a few years he'll realize what he's done, but the tie isn't over.
On Saka, he says it's unreal to come back so quickly and effectively, but though it's a special night, next week is another difficult game.
Merino says they were talking about maintaining the pace and tempo. The second half was amazing, starting with full gas, and the crowd came with them,.

    FOOTBALL, MAN
It's a dark world – and, frankly, a dark game – yet it's still always there for us. What would we do without it?

    OH – MY – DAZE
What have we just seen, mates? Did Arsenal really just devastate the champions of Europe? Did Declan Rice, without a free-kick goal in his career, just score two monsters within 12 minutes of each other? Surely not?!

    ARSENAL 3-0 REAL MADRID
Arsenal, and Declan Rice, have annihilated the European champions! An incredible night at the Emirates, the best in a generation and one of the club's best ever. People will make art about this.

    CAMAVINGA IS SENT OFF!
Already booked, he kicks the ball away, and i guess it doesn't matter than much as his first yellow meant he was out of the return, but the ignominy on top of ignominy won't make anyone of a Madrid perusasion feel any better.
    90+4'
MBAPPE MOVES INFIELD OFF THE LEFT, LOOKING FOR SOMETHING, ANYTHING
And finds none of the above. Arsenal shut him down expertly, and this second-half performance has been near-perfect.

    CHANGE FOR ARSENAL
    White returns, replacing Timber.

    WE'LL HAVE FOUR ADDITIONAL MINUTES
Can Madrid pinch a livener? Can Arsenal seize a ... fourth?!

THOSE NIGHTS YOU KNOW ARE ETERNAL EVEN AS THEY'RE HAPPENING
This is one. It's not often you beat Real Madrid, never mind 3-0, and with two incendiary free-kicks? You could wait several lifetimes before seeing anything remotely comparable.
    88'
    A GOAL FOR MADRID, THOUGH
And things look very different. Real talk, that doesn't look remotely likely, but it often doesn't and yet.
    86'
MADRID LOOK LIKE A TEAM OF INDIVIDUALS
There's no flow to them; they don't pop it about in triangles, and that makes them vulnerable. And, while it took two set-pieces to breach them, Arsenal were on top and coming.
    84'
    ODEGAARD CURLS UNDER THE BAR
    And Courtois punches away.

MADRID HAVE OFFERED NOTHING THIS HALF
Arsenal could go and get a fourth here, and Martinelli escapes down the left, his shot blocked behind for a corner...
    RICE'S FIRST GOAL
Was the first free-kick he'd scored in his career, 339 games and counting. It took a further 12 minutes for his second.

    OFF GOES RICE
On comes Tierney, so I guess Lewis-Skelly will move into midfield; Madrid try Fran Garcia for Alaba, fo all the difference that'll make.
