Bayern Munich 1-2 Internazionale: Lautaro Martinez stars as visitors snatch narrow UEFA Champions League quarter-final first-leg win in Germany

Internazionale produced a ruthless display to edge Bayern Munich 2-1 at the Allianz Arena and secure a potentially crucial lead in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

The excellent Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring with a sublime outside-of-the-boot finish after good work from Carlos Augusto and Marcus Thuram to set up the chance after a long ball had found Bayern stretched at the back.

Bayern, who hit the post in the first half through Harry Kane, huffed and puffed and finally found the equaliser when substitute Thomas Muller tucked home Konrad Laimer’s cross on 85 minutes.

But it took Inter just three minutes to retake the lead, with Lautaro finding Augusto, whose drilled cross was turned home from close range by Davide Frattesi to give Inter the win.

The result is the first time that Bayern have been beaten at home in the Champions League in four years and leaves Inter in a strong position ahead of the second leg in Milan in a week’s time.

Lautaro Martinez put in a stellar display up top for Inter Milan this evening and it was his excellent finish that got the ball rolling for Inter in this tie, with the chance set up by his striker partner Marcus Thuram.

The TNT Sports pundits were extremely impressed by that display from Inter, pinpointing the threat of their strike partnership and with Joe Cole going so far as to back up Karen Carney’s pick of Inter as potential title winners.

"They done a job on them," Cole said in the TNT Sports studio.

Inter Milan have become the first side to beat Bayern Munich at home in the Champions League for four years, doing so with a display of ruthless attacking quality that puts the Italian team 2-1 up ahead of the second leg in Milan. Bayern had more of the ball, 20 attempts on goal and seven on target, hitting the post through Harry Kane in the first half and equalising in the second through substitute Thomas Muller. But Inter’s attacking threat proved the difference on the day, and two excellent finishes have them in the stronger position to progress to the semi-finals.

The final whistle goes and Inter embrace after pulling off an impressive 2-1 win away at Bayern Munich in this first leg. That puts them in an excellent position ahead of next week’s second leg back in Milan.

Kimmich sends a free-kick into the box but nobody gets on the end of it and that may well be the last meaningful action of this game.

There will be four extra minutes played in Munich, with Bayern pushing hard for another equaliser.

The home crowd are stunned into silence as Inter counter and retake the lead within minutes. The visitors carve Bayern open, with Lautaro playing Augusto through on goal. He opts not to shoot from an angle and instead drills a cross right into the middle where it is finished, with incredible reactions, by Davide Frattesi.

Kane twists away from the attention of a quartet of defenders and somehow manages to get a shot away under intense pressure, looking to pick out the bottom corner from the edge of the box, but Sommer makes a sprawling save. The crowd are on their feet and Bayern have their tails up.

Bayern’s pressure finally tells as Laimer sends a cross right into the mixer and Thomas Muller is there at the back post to finish from close range. 1-1!

The cut-back is met by the onrushing Muller, but his shot is blocked and slides behind for a corner. Inter have looked solid from set-pieces all evening and deal with this one too.

Laimer lays the ball back for Kane on the edge of the box, but is a bobbling cut back and Kane is forced into an unusual technique, slicing a shot through a crowd of bodies and wide of the far post. That’s another chance though. Bayern’s search for a goal continues.

Both teams make changes for the final 16 minutes of this game. Guerreiro, Sane and Kim make way for Bayern, with the latter one yellow card away from a suspension, replaced by Boey, Muller and Gnabry. Inter bring on Frattesi for Mkhitaryan.

Harry Kane drives through the centre of the park and is tripped by Mkhitaryan who is booked for the foul. The free-kick is just on the edge of shooting distance, but comes to nothing as Kimmich looks for a run with a dink that floats through to Sommer.

The visitors are beginning to sit deeper and deeper, denying Bayern the space that they want in behind.

Guerreira chests the ball up on the edge of the box and volleys a shot fractionally over the bar. That was unbelievable technique from the Bayern midfielder.

Laimer curls in a gem of a cross from the right that is met by Stanisic, but he can only head over the bar. The frustration builds in the Bayern ranks.

The Bayern subs are going through a pretty rigorous warm-up down on the sideline. The home side are in need of a spot of inspiration – that early threat from Olise aside, they have lacked a bit of spark.
