Manuel Pellegrini: "I think that we will approach it as we do most of our matches, trying always to impose our footballing qualities, and to overcome Bayern Munich with our footballing qualities, but to also consider details regarding our opponents - not as a priority but as something important. For example when we give the ball to Bayern Munich we know it is very difficult to beat them. When we play like we are used to, and have ball possession, then it will be difficult for Bayern to win the ball back. So there are various aspects which start, for me, with the personality of the team to be able to impose their football against any opponent and on any pitch."

Pep Guardiola: "Manchester City won (here) with (Vincent) Kompany, (Yaya) Toure, (David) Silva, (Edin) Dzeko last year - fantastic players. They needed to win here to learn something, to learn they are able to win the Champions League. Last season they were able to win the Champions League and this year they are ready to win the Champions League, like eight, nine or 10 teams more who can win this trophy. We would like to be one of those teams. City were a strong team last year. That is why they won the Premier League and deserved to."

Man City's Sergio Aguero starts on the bench with Edin Dzeko preferred up front. £32 million summer signing Eliaquim Mangala, who was tipped to make his City debut, also starts on the bench with Martin Demichelis retaining his place in the heart of defence alongside captain Vincent Kompany.

Franck Ribery was ruled out of this clash on Monday evening after coach Pep Guardiola confirmed that the Frenchman's troublesome knee had flared up following his first Bundesliga appearance of the season at the weekend. Dutch winger Arjen Robben was expected to start for the German champions after recovering from his own knee injury, though he is only good enough for the bench. Robert Lewandowski leads the line for Bayern with Xabi Alonso making his first appearance in Europe for his new side.
