BIG CHANCE UNITED! A lovely one-two between Anderson and Rooney sends the Brazilian in but as he opens his body up for the left-foot finish he gets it a touch narrow and fires straight at Guaita ashe tries to place it into the bottom left.

Anderson with a good interception but a heavy pass beyond the stretching Berbatov. Should have done better, the Bulgarian was on the shoulder of the last defender.

Berbatov does well to rob Alba and now Carrick releases Fabio. Low ball in but Albelda again is back in his box to clear.

Albelda shows the other side of his game with a foul on Park in the United half.

Taken short and knocked deep by Pablo but over the head of Costa. Goal kick. Twice Berbatov has given the ball away and twice Valencia have had good chances as a result. Fabio now bombs down the left, crossing for Berbatov who attacks between two defenders but Albelda saves his team-mates' bacon with a great covering run and header clear.

Berbatov AGAIN gives it away on halfway and Valencia again break, Alba freed down the left but his cross is knocked behind by Ferdinand. Wake up Dimitar!

Ferdinand doesn't get a shout from Amos so just heads the long ball behind for a corner. Well I assume there was no shout, otherwise that was poor defending. Good corner too, low and vicious across the face of goal but hooked away by Carrick.
8'
Berbatov slides a nice ball in for Rooney but just a bit too soon and Guaitan claims.
7'
Berbatov from deep is a touch languid as he tries to clear, Aduriz intercepts, now Dominguez could be in on the left but Ferdinand gets across to slide the ball away before he can test Amos.
6'
Anderson with a quick free-kick from halfway that so nearly releases Berbatov, but Guaitan cleverly reads the intent and rushes out to dive on the ball first.
5'
Nani slips the free-kick short and wide to Anderson, he finds Rafael who passes inside back to Nani who takes a touch and shrugs off Mathieu before drilling a low shot a yard wide of the near post.
4'
Albelda clips Nani and United have a free-kick on the right. David Albelda has played in two Champions League finals with Los Che.
3'
Rio plays it forward, now Park slips it wide to Berbatov, who cuts inside but fails to find the Korean with the lay off.
3'
Nani hollers at Carrick after the England midfielder delays a pass wide, allowing Mathieu to block.
2'
United build down the left but Nani gives it away with Berbatov waiting in the box.

Wes Brown and Jonny Evans are ill, by the way - unsurprising given how relatively cold it is. Both captains, Vidic and Miguel, exchange banter with the referee in English, which Miguel seems to find amusing as - like him - the ref is Portuguese. Vidic chooses end over kick off.
19:43
The teams are out. United's is certainly stronger, with the goalkeeping question not a major one in theory as Vicente Guaitan is also Valencia's third choice, albeit more experienced. Ben Amos has played twice for United before - in the Carling Cup.

It is very, very cold out tonight, a brass monkey-busting -3 degrees celsius. Brrrr.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson on fielding a strong side: "The sensible approach would be to avoid the bigger hitters like Real Madrid and Barcelona."
