Schalke were 2-0 up by the 29th minute and on course for a seventh straight win -- a result that would have taken them seven points clear -- thanks to two goals from Kevin Kuranyi.
Diego Klimowicz pulled one back early in the second half, though, and Wolfsburg grabbed a point a minute from time when Marcelinho sent in a free kick that may just have brushed the head of Klimowicz on its way in at the far post.
Werder suffered a third straight loss when two goals from Rafael van der Vaart earned Hamburg SV a 2-0 victory in the big northern derby at the Weserstadion. The result was enough to take Hamburg off the bottom of the table.
Van der Vaart scored the first with a penalty three minutes before half-time after David Jarolim had been brought down by Daniel Jensen.
The Dutch playmaker got the second in the 87th minute after flicking the ball over the defence with a fine piece of skill.
Bayern's woes continued as they suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Alemannia Aachen in their final match before they travel to face Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday. Alexander Klitzpera got the only goal for Aachen.
Bayern's second defeat in three games since the return of Ottmar Hitzfeld was yet another missed opportunity for the champions.
Aachen moved ahead with their first chance of the match in the 10th minute when the ball dropped at the feet of Klitzpera following a deep corner.
Oliver Kahn pulled off a good reflex save but Klitzpera was quick to the rebound, just getting enough contact on the ball to take it past Philipp Lahm on the line.
Bayern had almost complete command of the game thereafter but their finishing was dreadful.
Roy Makaay, who had gone close with a free kick early in the game, missed chance after chance in a one-sided match but the worst failure came from Roque Santa Cruz, who hesitated when presented with an open goal and allowed the defence to clear.
Hanover continued their swift rise up the table with a third win in the last four games, 1-0 at Bayer Leverkusen.
Jan Rosenthal got the only goal in the seventh minute when he took a cross from the right from Chavdar Yankov, controlled the ball and fired in.
Mainz came from behind to win 2-1 at Hertha Berlin to make it four wins and a draw from their five matches since the restart.
Pal Dardai put the home side a goal to the good with a right-foot shot in the 22nd minute but Mohammed Zidan equalised with a penalty nine minutes after the break and Leon Andreasen got the winner 10 minutes later.
Borussia Moenchengladbach slipped to the bottom of the table as they suffered a 12th league defeat of the season, 1-0 at Borussia Dortmund.
Alexander Frei got the only goal in the 19th minute, running on to a well weighted through ball from Brazilian midfielder Tinga and slipping it through the legs of Kasey Keller.
