New Zealand had a lot to thank 'keeper Paul Woolford for, although Japan's finishing was poor in a scrappy game.
With seven points from three matches, the Black Sticks can secure semi final qualification but face tough matches against form side Spain and top seed Australia.
Japan's are only team in the competition yet to register a point and lie bottom of Pool A.
