Scotland's Josh Kerr wants to ‘push the limits’ at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after world record

Scotland’s Josh Kerr has said that he wants to ‘push the limits’ at the Commonwealth Games after breezing through the men’s mile heat. Kerr qualified for the final with a time of 3:58.57 as he won the first of two heats, and will now take his place in the final 12 as he bids for Commonwealth gold.

It has been a whirlwind fortnight for Kerr, who set the new mile world record with a time of 3:42.66 in the London leg of the Diamond League on July 18.
That has seen significantly more eyes fall onto him ahead of these games.
And with the 2026 Commonwealth Games also falling in Glasgow and being a home Games, as well as the mile making a long-awaited return to the competition after a 60-year absence, Kerr is arguably the biggest name there.
The heat was nothing more than a leg stretcher for Kerr, with the 28-year-old breezing past his opponents.
It was ominously easy for Kerr, who spoke of how much he wants to continue to push the limits of what is possible.
”Obviously coming off of a high emotionally in the last 10 days or so, I just wanted to get a good run out and hopefully not feel super fatigued,” he said.

”So that’s what that felt like, a nice little cut down in the last 600 and yeah, the legs felt great.
”I love that more and more people keep buying in and watching the sport and enjoying us pushing the limits, and hopefully it will get more and more people’s eyeballs on it, so I am excited to keep doing that.”
The mile was last in the Commonwealth Games in 1966, making it an event of even more significance this time around.

Kerr has the world record, but what he does not have is the Commonwealth Games gold in the mile event.
He has done the first part by reaching Saturday’s final - next is to get to the top of the podium, and Kerr is confident he is in the right place to do that.
”This is everything I wanted it to be. The milers have shown up and it is a great field out there, and I am just excited to be a part of that and battle for a Commonwealth Games gold medal on Saturday,” Kerr added.
”I think going after fast times is one thing, but I am obviously known as a championship racer and that didn’t change all too much.
”Obviously London was a huge priority, but it sets us up really well for championship-style racing, so yeah, we are in a good spot.”
