The seven-time champion lost the first set of the quarter-final clash in a tie-break after his Croatian opponent went into a 5-0 points lead, before clinching it 7-4.
Things did not get any better for the Swiss star as the Croatian took it 6-4.
With Novak Djokovic falling to Sam Querrey in the third round, the draw had looked to have opened up for Federer, with his last title at the All England Club coming in 2012. However, if he fails to take advantage, No 2 seed Andy Murray will be further boosted ahead of his last-eight clash with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
