British underdog Arthur Fery continues fairytale run as five-set win over Grigor Dimitrov secures place in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon 2026

Great Britain’s Arthur Fery continued his fairytale run as he came from behind to defeat Grigor Dimitrov in a five-set thriller on Centre Court.

The Bulgarian, who reached the last four in SW19 in 2014, was a clear favourite to progress but the 23-year-old home hope’s never-say-die spirit saw him edge a match tie-break 10-7 and claim a famous 7-5 3-6 4-6 6-4 7-6 victory in three hours and 55 minutes.

Dimitrov did not drop a point in his first four service games but came unstuck in the 11th chapter of the opener as Fery broke to love. The world number 114 did not blink as he served it out with a clutch delivery on his second set point.

The Brit stayed toe-to-toe with the former world number three for much of the second stanza, but a raft of unforced errors off the backhand saw him cough up the break in the eighth game, allowing Dimitrov to serve out and level matters.

The 35-year-old Bulgarian made it five games in a row as he backed up an early break in the third and the British underdog looked somewhat subdued as Dimitrov stood firm to move into a two-sets-to-one lead.

The world number 146 twice blew a break advantage in the fourth stanza and he was made to pay as he lost three games on the spin from 4-3 up to allow the Brit to force a decider.

Both players battled hard throughout the decider but it was Fery who was more solid in the match tie-break as he took it on the first of two match points to set up a clash with ninth seed, Flavio Cobolli in the last eight.

He’s done it!

The last British hope books his spot in the Wimbledon quarter finals as he edges out former world No.3 Dimitrov by a 10-7 scoreline in the match tie-break.

Arthur can’t believe it as he comes from behind to edge it in a bit of a classic.

Dimitrov can’t find the island and Centre Court erupts as Fery leads 8-6.

The Bulgarian holds to reduce the arrears but Fery gets two serves to seal the deal.

Dimi buckles on the first with a forced slice into the net from tight to his baseline - and it's TWO match points for the Brit...

Dimitrov bites back from 2-4 down as he slides a volley up the line to earn the mini break, before hitting the front when great height and depth on a forehand force a rushed error into the net from his opponent.

The Bulgarian double faults to tie the breaker and we remain finely poised as Fery stands firm at the net prior to the second change of ends.

Ferry kicks us off with an ace and there’s nothing between them until the Brit's rasping return puts Dimi on the back foot and lures that one-handed error into the net once again.

Dimitrov stands firm with a convincing hold to 15 and we will head into a match tie-break (first to 10 points).

Dimitrov has a wry smile to himself as he butchers another close-range volley at the net at 0-15.

Fery then booms a deep forehand to the postage stamp but drags into the net to feel some heat at Pulp (30-30).

The Brit stoops to his right to angle away a low crosscourt volley to stay on track and edges the hold when Dimi fizzes a forehand just long.  

Dimitrov fizzes a nervy forehand wide to open, but a timely ace and a sublime half volley put him in charge.

The Bulgarian slices well wide down the line but a huge crosscourt plus-one forehand and an inside-in strike down the line haul him through a tricky hold to 30.

Fery drills a forehand from the right side of his forecourt way long to leave the crowd murmuring in concern at 15-30.

The Brit responds with a delightful backhand volley but frames a ball high into the sky to feel some heat at deuce.

Dimitrov lets him off the hook with a mid-court forehand into the net and Arthur holds his arm aloft again as he edges over the line to apply some very significant scoreboard pressure.

Fery ups the ante at Pulp (30-30) and calls for the crowd to feed him with their energy.

Centre Court responds with a rush of noise, but Dimitrov hushes them with a spectacular forehand down the line before another probing strike off that wing lures the error and has the Bulgarian barking in delight (and relief).

Fery keeps pushing that board.

The Brit has real belief that he can pull off the shock win here and fatigued-looking Grigor is going to have to dig extra deep now.

The Swiss Maestro is looking rather suave as one of the guests of honour on Centre Court today and has already had Jasmine Paolini gushing after the Italian saw off Alexandra Eala in the first match in this arena earlier today.

Dimitrov drills a lacklustre backhand into the net to create a sense of expectation on Centre Court, but the former world No.3 takes care of business on serve and survives another volley howler to hold to 30 when Arthur fires an over-zealous return long.

Fery bunts a loose forehand way long to trail 15-30 but darts to the net to flash away a volley and get back on track.

The Brit outlasts Dimi in a pulsating rally at Pulp and raises his fist in delight when the tired-looking Bulgarian fails to keep the ball in play.  

Dimitrov back pedals into his left wing and sizzles an inside-in forehand that licks the back edge of the baseline.

The Bulgarian follows it with a pair of aces and quickly moves level with a love hold.

Fery pumps his fist as he ticks off another hold to 30 to keep his nose in front early in the fifth.

Well, that was much-needed.

Dimitrov belatedly finds a bit of a groove as a cheeky flick of the wrist sees him glide away a glorious backhand crosscourt pass to conclude a hold to love.

Dimitrov continues to wrestle with some inner demons and his game is lacking clarity right now.

The Bulgarian will need to reset quickly to avoid this turning into a bit of a disaster as Arthur kicks off the decider with a solid hold to 30.

We are going the distance!

It’s great spirit from Fery, but quite the collapse from Dimitrov.

The Bulgarian double faults and loses his bearings on court to allow the Brit to thud a wrong-footing forehand down the line.

The wobble continues as he dumps a very make-able volley into the net and Arthur suddenly has a look at THREE set points.

The Bulgarian saves two, but is unlocked by a sensational crosscourt pass on the third – and the British hope pushes this into a one-set shoot-out!
