French Open 2024 Day 9 recap: Novak Djokovic survives decider to make history before Alexander Zverev edges Holger Rune in five

Alexander Zverev’s dream of a first ever Grand Slam title remains alive as he completes a comeback success following a thriller with young starlet Holger Rune.

The Dane had plenty of big moments but in the end the No.4 seed’s power in heavy conditions proved key and he broke again in the decider on his second match point to reach his fourth consecutive quarter-final at the tournament and become just the sixth player to reach the last eight here on SIX occasions this century.

The German completes the victory in four hours and 11 minutes and will meet No.11 seed Alex De Minaur next.

The finish line grows larger on Sascha’s horizon as he shrugs off one of those sensational crosscourt backhand passes from his opponent to finish off a confident hold to 15 with a superb drop shot.

It’s a must-win service game for Holger Rune – and he delivers.

The Dane lands a clutch serve and a heat-seeking forehand before edging the game to 30 with a supreme, improvised lob that clips the baseline and simply bamboozles Zverev.

Sascha consolidates to 15 and that scoreboard will look like the summit of Everest to Rune right now despite it still being just that one break.

It’s a tale of drop shots as Rune fails to pick one up with a crosscourt attempt into the net before seeing Zverev get to his and angle away a volley.

It clocks up another two break points for the German who finally gets what his persistence deserves with a break off a bullet return.

What a contrast!

Zverev dusts himself down following the disappointment of not making the breakthrough and rampages through a quick-fire love hold to keep the pressure firmly on the young Dane.

It’s a real mixed bag from Holger at the moment – but he somehow comes through unscathed following an almighty battle.

Ace No.8 and a clever jabbed winner off a drop-shot pick-up, keep him in the hunt but some weak, indecisive slices help Zverev clock up the first break point of the decider.

Rune makes deuce with a clinical smash and then survives a second when he reacts to a net cord to just about fizz a crosscourt winner.  

Once again the No.13 seed snatches at a backhand and buries it in the net, but he wipes it out with Ace No.9.

It’s rinse and repeat on the fourth BP and from there it’s all about some magic as his drilled backhand packs too much heat before he goes on to escape an 11-minute test of his serve with an improvised pass down the line on the retreat.  

‘An impatient Holger Rune at the start of this fifth set,’ observes Jo Durie on Eurosport Comms.

She’s not wrong either as the Dane snatches at some early returns to allow Zverev to chalk up a routine game to 15.

The German has the scoreboard advantage and that can often be significant in a decider...

The Serb has cast doubt on his bid for a 25th major after aggravating a knee problem in his win over Francisco Cerundolo.

Rune will need to reset quickly as he loses an important breaker 7-2 to pretty much hand a rock-solid Zverev the lifeline.

We are heading into a decider with that final place in the last eight still very much up for grabs!

Sascha buckles on a slow-pace short ball with a forehand into the net but avoids a mini break when Rune catapults a forehand of his own just long.

The Norwegian mixes it up in a 34-shot rally with the dropper but again Zverev gets there and the attempted pass from the No.13 seed can only find the net.

Zverev takes firm control with a sharp return that catches Holger out and it’s the German’s to lose as a massive serve sees him pull well clear at the change of ends.

Zverev sighs with relief when Rune ends another lung-busting rally by drilling a backhand just long.

It could have been 0-30 but instead the German takes charge with a proactive forehand down the line helping to edge him in front.

A booming serve tees up an emphatic volley and the Olympic champion takes us into the breaker with another clutch serve.

Talk about a purple patch!

Rune hammers a trio of winners and a seventh ace to blitz through a clean hold and flip this set on its head.

Zverev served for it just moments ago – now he must hold to stay in the tournament!

Rune settles into his task when he takes another early return on and cannons a mesmeric winner.

It makes Zverev think twice and he coughs up a third double fault of the night to set the nerves jangling at 15-30.

The Dane then hits back-to-back belting forehands to earn two break back points when he comes up trumps in a wonderful 26-shot rally.

Zverev’s serve saves one but just when it looks like he’s got Rune penned back, the Scandinavian drills another astonishing crosscourt pass to level matters!  

Rune nails his sixth ace and quickly mops up a game to 15 to give himself one last chance to break back and avoid the decider.

This time Zverev makes it count as Ace No.13 lights the path to a solid hold to 15.

He’s one game away from taking us into a fifth.
