GAUFF WINS ALL-AMERICAN CLASH TO REACH ANOTHER ROLAND-GARROS SEMI-FINAL
Coco Gauff made it back-to-back French Open semi-finals with a superb comeback victory to snap Madison Keys’ winning streak at Grand Slams.
The world number two overcame an error-strewn start to prevail 6-7 6-4 6-1 in two hours and 11 minutes.
A nervy opening saw just one hold of serve in the opening six games with Keys surging into a 4-1 lead before saving set point as Gauff roared back to hit the front at 5-4.
An error-strewn 58-minute opener then concluded in a tie-break as the seventh seed triumphed 8-6 on her second set point.
Gauff earned a double break to lead 4-1 in the second but, in-keeping with the streaky nature of the match, Keys hit back to level.
A rasping crosscourt forehand saw the second seed break straight after and then serve out from 15-30 down to force the decider.
Australian Open champion Keys, who was targeting a 12th win in a row at Majors this year, immediately fell behind in the third with her 50th unforced error handing Gauff an instant break.
The 21-year-old former US Open then broke again to surge 4-1 ahead before reaching the third French Open semi-final of her career when Keys' 60th unforced error of the encounter saw her convert on her first math point.
Gauff will meet Mirra Andreeva or French wildcard Lois Boisson in the last four.

Coco shrugs off her 10th double fault of the match and a belting crosscourt forehand from Keys to feather over a delicious drop shot to edge ahead from 30-30.

BREAK! – KEYS 7-6 4-6 1-4 GAUFF
Maddy produces a super backhand wrong-footer to tee up a forehand finish to stave off break point and reach deuce.
There’s no doubt the quality is much-improved now and it’s Gauff looking extremely strong as she booms a forehand down the line to earn a second chance before making it count with a searing crosscourt backhand to the corner.

KEYS 7-6 4-6 1-3 GAUFF
Gauff finds the first serve and plays safe tennis to ease through another most-welcome clean hold.

KEYS 7-6 4-6 1-2 GAUFF
‘It’s better tennis than the first two sets," says Evert.
Let’s hope it leads to a barnstorming finale as Keys stays in touch with a clean hold that sees her stay in the hunt.
The seventh seed kept her forehand under control really well there, but will need to do that consistently if she’s to resuscitate her dream of making the last four from here.

KEYS 7-6 4-6 0-2 GAUFF
That was solid from Coco.
The world number two just stays in the rallies and awaits the errors as she consolidates to love with Keys continuing to misfire.

BREAK! – KEYS 7-6 4-6 0-1 GAUFF
"Wow – what a point," exclaims Evert on TNT Sports comms as Keys hovers low to drill a backhand pass down the line.
"That makes up for the whole match so far," she jokes.
"It’s the best point of the match and the longest rally of the match. It’s the first smile I’ve seen on Madison Keys’ face. We are in store for a treat (in the decider) if that’s the standard we are going to see."
It all gets much more tense following that opening point of the final stanza as Maddy booms a brilliant forehand down the line before lashing one long to feel pressure at deuce.
The seventh seed has her chances to close-out the game but a 50th unforced error of the contest hands the break to Coco.

BREAK! – KEYS 7-6 4-5 GAUFF
‘Urgh,’ groans Keys as she guides a woeful crosscourt attempt at a defensive slice hopelessly into the net to offer up two break points.
The seventh seed takes care with an excellent bounce smash from deep to fend off one, but is unlocked by a brilliant crosscourt forehand from the world number two, who will now serve for the set.

BREAK! – KEYS 7-6 4-4 GAUFF
"It’s a shame. It’s the quarter-finals of a Major and they haven’t found their best game,’ says Evert on TNT Sports comms.
The seven-time Roland-Garros winner adds that Keys and Gauff needs to figure out why they aren’t playing well and is shocked that BOTH are way below par.
Indeed, they can both be streaky players and right now Gauff’s levels have dipped dramatically after looking more solid in this set.
Keys unloads a series of big, big forehands to snare the double break back on her second opportinity.
Talk about unpredictable!

BREAK! – KEYS 7-6 1-4 GAUFF
Gauff rattles a brilliant return winner down the line and pockets the insurance with a break to 15.
Keys has been woeful in this second set. The seventh seed is now up to 39 unforced errors with just 19 winners.
The 30-year-old’s forehand has been a real issue and it’s allowing a much-improved Coco to pull away at the moment.
For the record, the world number two's stats aren't so great either: 15 winners versus 31 unforced errors.

KEYS 7-6 1-3 GAUFF
On TNT Sports comms, Chris Evert again points out the lack of quality in the match, succinctly saying it ‘has not been pretty.’
Gauff allows Madison back in from 40-15 down to cough up break back point but the seventh seed then scoops long.
Coco eventually backs up the break with her serve doing the heavy lifting from deuce.

Oof.
Keys has the points on her racquet to reach the sanctuary of deuce but flashes the inside-in forehand long.
It hands Gauff the break after the American had fluffed the first of two opportunities with a second serve return low into the net.

On TNT Sports comms, Evert reiterates the lack of quality in the contest with errors taking the spotlight more often than not.
This game is a case in point with both players going through the motions and still struggling for rhythm.
Gauff eventually survives from deuce to get back on the board.

SET! – KEYS 7-6 GAUFF
Ouch. A third double fault of the breaker – Gauff’s seventh overall – hands Maddy a second set point.
This time the seventh seed lands a clutch wide serve to force the return wide and secure a topsy-turvy opener by an 8-6 scoreline in the breaker in 58 minutes.
