SABALENKA OUTCLASSES THE QUEEN OF CLAY TO REACH FIRST ROLAND-GARROS FINAL
Aryna Sabalenka booked her spot in the 2025 French Open final after ending the reign of three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek with a powerhouse performance.
The world number one was in irrepressible form as she snapped the Queen of Clay’s 26-match winning run at the tournament with a 7-6 4-6 6-0 success to reach the last weekend at Roland-Garros for the first time.
Sabalenka flew out of the blocks to lead 3-0 and then 4-1 as the top seed relentlessly crushed the return, kept rallies short and forced Swiatek into a succession of rushed errors.
The fifth seed finally worked her way into the battle and won four games in a row to edge 5-4 ahead, but Sabalenka steadied the ship before surging through the tie-break by a 7-1 scoreline.
A flurry of breaks kicked off Set 2 with Swiatek responding strongly to push 3-1 in front and find sudden rhythm on serve to go on and force a decider.
The Pole had a half chance in the opening game of the third but Sabalenka stood firm and then rampaged clear to notch up a third-set bagel and complete victory in two hours and 19 minutes.
The result means Swiatek’s bid to become the first woman in the Open Era to win four French Open titles in a row is over following what is only her third ever defeat at the tournament.
Sabalenka will now be a strong favourite to win her first Roland-Garros title – and her fourth major – when she faces Coco Gauff or Lois Boisson in Saturday’s final.
