AN INSPIRED CARLOS ALCARAZ MAKES STATEMENT OF INTENT WITH ROUT OF TOMMY PAUL
Carlos Alcaraz was at his scintillating best as he demolished Tommy Paul to roar into the French Open semi-finals.
The reigning champion cut through the 12th seed’s defences at will to secure a 6-0 6-1 6-4 victory in just one hour and 34 minutes.
The writing was on the wall for the American when the second seed battered through his resistance in a lengthy second game before rampaging through a sensational opener in just 30 minutes.
It was a similar story in the second as Paul earned rapturous applause from the Court Philippe-Chatrier crowd when he finally got on the board eight games in.
It was a brief respite as Alcaraz continued to race through service games and break at will to move one set from victory inside 53 minutes.
Paul improved hugely on serve to keep Alcaraz at bay up until the ninth game in the third and the 22-year-old served out to love from there to conclude a statement victory.
Alcaraz, who hit 40 winners and 22 unforced errors, will now meet Lorenzo Musetti in the last four on Friday.

BREAK! – ALCARAZ 6-0 6-1 5-4 PAUL
If a drop-shot could drip and ooze quality, then that just did.
Alcaraz has Paul sliding forward in vain again as the sheer touch and finesse completely bamboozles him.
A backhand long then has the American groaning in disappointment and his mood darkens further when he drags a forehand wide.
The 12th seed looks set to be undone by another dropper, but his pick-up down the line is so good and so deep that Carlitos is put on the back foot and Paul tidies up with a volley at the net.
The Spaniard refuses to be denied on the second break point, however, and his return down the line ends with Paul clawing it desperately into the net.
The world number two will now serve for the match.

ALCARAZ 6-0 6-1 4-4 PAUL
There have been some spectacular encounters between these two over the years, but this has been largely one-sided.
Paul has some life in him at the moment but Alcaraz is desperate to finish this off and remains laser-focused, pummelling away a brilliant short forehand on his way to another clean hold.

ALCARAZ 6-0 6-1 3-4 PAUL
It’s great hustle from Tommy Paul as he fights back from 0-30 to make 30-30 with a smash to thwart more sensational defence from the Spaniard.
This time it’s Alcaraz’s turn to shank a forehand off court and the belief in Paul continues to rise as he shouts with determination on grinding out another fine hold.

ALCARAZ 6-0 6-1 2-3 PAUL
Paul is landing that first serve much better in this third set, but Alcaraz still manages to surge back from 30-0 down with more relentless pace off that forehand causing the American to swish at air.
The 12th seed comes up clutch with a 128mph serve to the body to earn game point and this time he refuses to allow an outstanding defensive lob to turn the tables against him, unleashing some spectacular angle on a crosscourt forehand to ignite the crowd's hopes!
20:45
ALCARAZ 6-0 6-1 2-2 PAUL
The Chatrier crowd are intrigued when Alcaraz thuds a forehand into the net to open.
The air of expectation disappears immediately when Paul shanks into the net post off another blur of a forehand from his opponent and Alcaraz reels off the next three points to quickly tie the board.

Well now, are we finally seeing something of a fight from Tommy Paul?

‘Come on!’ barks Paul as Alcaraz tip-toes back into his left corner and blasts an inside-out forehand just long.
The American is in control on a short ball at 30-30 on his forehand and guns it to the corner. Alcaraz reaches into the sky and somehow gets it back into play before nailing a backhand winner.

ALCARAZ 6-0 2-1 PAUL
Paul continues to struggle on the return without any donations from Carlitos.

ALCARAZ 6-0 1-0 PAUL
Alcaraz’s incredible level was bound to drop at some point and he opens the second set with some surprising errors to leave the door ajar at 0-30.
The Spaniard quickly does a reboot, revs that first serve and zaps away the missile-like forehand to reel off four points in around, slam the door shut and extend the winning streak to seven games.

SET! – ALCARAZ 6-0 PAUL
It’s the bagel!
There are cheers for every point Paul wins as the Chatrier crowd almost plead with the American to make a fight of this contest.
The American earns game point when Carlitos lobs just long, but he’s pushed to deuce again when the Spaniard sizzles a blur of a crosscourt forehand winner.
The No.2 seed bats away another game point with a superb dropper and then adjusts to drill a backhand return winner and tee up set point.
Paul retorts with an ace down the T but Alcaraz’s insane speeds sees him retrieve a low ball near the right side of the net and feather a wonderful pick-up to earn a second chance at the bagel.
The Spaniard is hungry for it and he gets it as more monstrous groundstrokes earn the error into the net from the 12th seed to conclude the opening stanza in 30 minutes.
