Fed Cup brings new format

Fed Cup, the largest international team for women in sport, will launch a new format in 2005 that incorporates the home-and-away system that is intrinsic to the success and immense popularity of Davis Cup.

Fed Cup will have a 16 nation World Group with the eight top nations competing in World Group I for a chance to lift the Fed Cup trophy while the eight nations in World Group II will compete for promotion in World Group I in the subsequent year.
Eighty-eight nations will compete in Fed Cup 2005 from the elite World Group through Zonal Groups I,II, and III.
From 2005, the Fed Cup final will move from the end of the women's professional season to the week after the U.S. Open.
The Dates for Fed Cup World Group I mathes in 2005 are: 1st Round- 23, 24 April; Semifinals- 9,10 July; and Final- 17, 18 September.
First Round matches from World Group I include from top to bottom:
Russia v Italy, USA v Belgium, Argentina v Spain and Austria v France
