Former world number one Ferrero has struggled with injury for much of this season and slipped to 33rd in the rankings.
His hopes of a defence of his Madrid Masters title were dashed on Wednesday when he lost 6-3 6-1 to Luis Horna of Peru in the second round.
Despite his struggles, Ferrero remains an integral part of Spain's Davis Cup team and is almost certain to play singles against the U.S. in Seville from December 3 to 5.
