Andy Murray receives wild card for Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after Australian Open 2023 recuperation

The former world No. 1 previously won the event in 2017.

Andy Murray will compete at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after receiving a wild card for the event.

The ATP 500 event begins on February 19, and will see the Brit competing in the tournament he previously won in 2017, beating Fernando Verdasco in the final.

“Coming back to Dubai brings with it a lot of good memories, not least 2017 and the final with Fernando,” said Murray.

“My form is improving and my game is getting better, so the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships provides another great opportunity for me to continue to climb back up the rankings.”

Murray joins the likes of Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and 2022 champion Andrey Rublev among others competing at this year’s event.

“We are delighted to welcome Andy back to Dubai,” said Colm McLoughlin, the executive vice chairman and CEO of Dubai Duty Free.

“Everybody knows how important a figure he is in British tennis and, as we have seen in the seven previous times he has competed at our event, he always attracts a strong and passionate support base.

“He accepted our wild card last year and was a credit to the tournament, and we are very happy he has accepted our invite once again.”

The 35-year-old currently sits at No. 61 in the ATP rankings but recently impressed in his run to the third round of the Australian Open.

After victories in two five-set epics against Matteo Berrettini and Thanasi Kokkinakis, the three-time Grand Slam winner was eventually eliminated following defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut.

His exertions in Melbourne saw him withdraw from the Rotterdam Open beginning on February 13, but ahead of his return to Dubai, Murray is expected to compete at the Qatar Open from February 20.
