Wuhan Open 2025 recap - Judd Trump eases through, Xiao Guodong makes 147, world champion Zhao Xintong agonisingly close to maximum

The 2025/26 snooker season thunders on with the players making their way to China for the Wuhan Open. Neil Robertson and Ronnie O’Sullivan are taking well-earned breaks after their stunning final in the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters, but world No. 1 Judd Trump is in action. He got his challenge underway with a 5-1 victory over Farakh Ajaib. Defending champion Xiao Guodong hit a 147.

Maximum and near-maximum on bumper day

Defending Wuhan Open champion Xiao Guodong secured a 147 break, while world champion Zhao Xintong went agonisingly close on a fine opening day of action.

Xiao's came in the fourth frame of his 5-0 victory over Mink Nutcharut, while Zhao had the opportunity as he went 3-1 up against Julian Boiko in a match he went on to win 5-3.

Zhao let his concentration slip and missed the pink when it seemed a certainty we would have a second maximum.

Elsewhere, three-time world champion Mark Williams made three straight centuries before holding off a comeback from Liam Davies to win 5-3.

World No. 1 Judd Trump was not in top form but was too good for Farakh Ajaib, winning 5-1.

An amusing moment came when Michael Holt, after Mark Selby forged too far ahead for him to catch in the last frame, threw his white towel (a de facto flag) in front of his opponent taking a shot. Selby won the match 5-2.

The world champion hits the blue off the table, ending his break at 122, after his earlier 132 and 134, when he missed the pink en route to a maximum.

At the end of the match an amusing moment as Holt threw his towel - a white flag if you will - on the table in front of Selby as he was about to take a shot.

Trump misses a long black but Ajaib offers his hand. Only flashes of his brilliance today but he is safely in Round 2 where he will play Liu Hongyu.

Trump secures frame with fluke blue off two cushions - you presume it's a fluke, no gesture from the world number one.

Ajaib pots the yellow and then leaves an awfully tough snooker which just misses the green ball. Two snookers needed, two secured.

After Ajaib misses firing a red towards the left middle, Trump misses a rough one into the pocket opposite and leaves Ajaib another chance. But a baffling safety choice leaves the world number one with an opportunity to win it now.

Ajaib gets out of the snooker and flukes the red into the right middle. He has a chance now to take advantage of this good fortune.

Confident couple of reds from Ajaib, but he takes on a very tough red along the bottom cushion and misses it by a long way. Trump back on the table now.

A dastardly snooker from Hawkins sees Jones go for a hit and hope which misses everything. Somehow nothing was left on and he was put back in the snooker. Another hit and hope later and again he missed everything. This time he leaves a red on for Hawkins though.

A break of 90 re-establishes DIng's two-frame lead.

Jones has a chance but can only get to 25 before losing position. A key frame this before the interval.

An 86, backing up his 88 in the last, has Fu in front as the pair take a break.

He did it in installments, but Zhang gets over the line to halve Ding's lead.

It took a while to take it, but eventually a very good pink with the rest, puts Hawkins in front again.

Jones had a chance to put the frame beyond doubt but this time it looks like Hawkins will steal a frame.

A poor attempt at getting out of a snooker from Hawkins. He touched the red, but left it on for Jones who should now clinch the frame at this visit to level things.

Fu stays in his chair after White leaves him needing snookers. It could be the most intriguing of the early games this one between the old stagers.

After a very poor start to proceedings, a classy break of 54 from Hawkins to seal the opener.

Finally after turgid snooker, the impasse has ended and Hawkins has pot a few balls. The state of the table means a game-winning break is unlikely here.

After a slow start it looks like Ding will clinch the opener in his match.

The last game from the early session has just finished with 17-year-old Xinbo Wang coming out on top.

White got a bad kiss off the pink and, though he potted it, going around the table to get on the black he went in off.

White pots the red and a very good black and it looks like we are going to a re-spotted black.

A very good 59 break, stifled by the last red glued to the left cushion, means White can only tie if he clears up.

White left a red into the left middle agonizingly short and a good plant from Fu set himself up for a potential game-winning break.

Messy start to the frame. Hawkins missed a thin contact on a red trying to play a safety. Now the black is over the left corner pocket, leading to a stalemate.

Barry Hawkins and Jamie Jones is on the main table, but we will also keep tabs on Ding Junhai against countryman Hao Zhang and a throwback encounter between Jimmy White and Marco Fu.
