Maximum and near-maximum on bumper day
Defending Wuhan Open champion Xiao Guodong secured a 147 break, while world champion Zhao Xintong went agonisingly close on a fine opening day of action.
Xiao's came in the fourth frame of his 5-0 victory over Mink Nutcharut, while Zhao had the opportunity as he went 3-1 up against Julian Boiko in a match he went on to win 5-3.
Zhao let his concentration slip and missed the pink when it seemed a certainty we would have a second maximum.
Elsewhere, three-time world champion Mark Williams made three straight centuries before holding off a comeback from Liam Davies to win 5-3.
World No. 1 Judd Trump was not in top form but was too good for Farakh Ajaib, winning 5-1.
An amusing moment came when Michael Holt, after Mark Selby forged too far ahead for him to catch in the last frame, threw his white towel (a de facto flag) in front of his opponent taking a shot. Selby won the match 5-2.

Selby back at the table and now over the line. He will take his place in Round 3.

Trump misses a long black but Ajaib offers his hand. Only flashes of his brilliance today but he is safely in Round 2 where he will play Liu Hongyu.
Trump 4-1 Ajaib (48*-10)
This time he looks like making it pay. Trump just a few pots away from Round 2 now.
Trump 4-1 Ajaib (23*-10)
A couple of good long pots and Trump is back amongst the balls.
Trump 4-1 Ajaib (9-10*)
On cue, Trump misses and now Ajaib is at the table.
Trump 4-1 Ajaib (9*-1)
A good long red sets up Trump and now the table looks open to do some damage.
Trump 4-1 Ajaib (4-1)
After the classy exhibition in the last frame, this one has had a real messy start.
Trump 4-1 Ajaib
Break ends at 130 after a fantastic brown and blue which have the crowd on their feet.
Trump 3-1 Ajaib (102*-0)
Just like that, Trump brings up hundred number 1095. After the sludgy opening, this is very smooth indeed.
Trump 3-1 Ajaib (22*-0)
A good long pot gets Trump going after the interval.
Selby 2-2 Holt
Not great quality in this match so far, but it looks like going to the wire judging by the frames so far.
Williams 4-1 Davies
Davies gets a frame on the board to avoid a whitewash.
Ding showboat black earlier...
Didn't make any difference but surely it should have been called a foul.

Ding wows crowd with showboat black - but was it a foul?

Trump 3-1 Ajaib
Trump secures frame with fluke blue off two cushions - you presume it's a fluke, no gesture from the world number one.
Trump 2-1 Ajaib (47-29)
Ajaib creeping closer. He pots green and brown.
Trump 2-1 Ajaib (47-22)
Ajaib pots the yellow and then leaves an awfully tough snooker which just misses the green ball. Two snookers needed, two secured.
Trump 2-1 Ajaib (47-16)
Trump pots the red and now Ajaib comes back to the table needing two snookers to tie, but an in off from Trump means only one is now required.
Trump 2-1 Ajaib (46-12)
A mini-break has Trump on the cusp of taking the frame with one red left on the table.
Trump 2-1 Ajaib (25-12)
Trump immediately misses a colour and the frame remains in the balance.
Trump 2-1 Ajaib (25*-9)
A stop-start frame so far, but a couple of good long pots left Ajaib with a chance to do some damage, before he missed a pot he should have gobbled. Now Trump could well take advantage.
Williams 4-0 Davies
No century, but Williams still powered ahead with a 49 break to take a fourth frame.
Trump 2-1 Ajaib (3*-1)
A fine long pot from Ajaib, but he was unlucky with position and now Trump is at the table.
Williams 3-0 Davies (31-38)
For a while a fourth straight ton looked a possibility but Williams, coming to the table after Davies' early burst, just fell out of position.
Trump 2-1 Ajaib
The break ended at 45 but was enough to get Ajaib on the board.
Trump 2-0 Ajaib (8-64*)
Ajaib has taken advantage on this occasion and will take the frame.
Trump 2-0 Ajaib (8-28*)
Trump with a poor miss this time and Ajaib won't get a better chance to seal a frame in a visit.
Trump 2-0 Ajaib (8-20)
Ajaib keeps missing simple pots. You can't against most top players let alone Trump. This time he is saved for now by the black rolling back over the bottom right pocket.
Trump 2-0 Ajaib (1*-0)
Trump kicks off in this frame with a gentle red into the left middle.
Williams 3-0 Davies
This time a 137 from Williams. Three frames, three centuries, this is remarkable.
Trump 2-0 Ajaib
The break ends at 89 but it's more than enough to double Trump's lead.
Trump 1-0 Ajaib (69*-0)
Trump is over the line now and looks set to seal it with a century.
Williams 2-0 Davies
Two frames, two centuries for Williams - this time a flat 100. That's the way to do it.
Trump 1-0 Ajaib (18*-0)
Ajaib leaves Trump on a pretty easy mid-range red to start off and after breaking up the reds this looks like a frame-winning chance.
Trump 1-0 Ajaib
Trump seals the frame and gives the crowd an exhibition pink, going around the table, to enjoy.
Trump 0-0 Ajaib (40*-37)
After Ajaib misses firing a red towards the left middle, Trump misses a rough one into the pocket opposite and leaves Ajaib another chance. But a baffling safety choice leaves the world number one with an opportunity to win it now.
Trump 0-0 Ajaib (39-31*)
Ajaib gets out of the snooker and flukes the red into the right middle. He has a chance now to take advantage of this good fortune.
Trump 0-0 Ajaib (39-14)
Trump with a good long pot, but with no colour on he has to settle for laying a snooker.
Williams 1-0 Davies
That's the way to start...a 125 break from the Class of 92 alum.
Trump 0-0 Ajaib (38-14)
Again Trump couldn't seal the frame when at the table and now he has a tough snooker to leave safe after Ajaib's good long pot and nestle behind the pink (on the green spot).
Trump 0-0 Ajaib (18*-13)
Confident couple of reds from Ajaib, but he takes on a very tough red along the bottom cushion and misses it by a long way. Trump back on the table now.
Trump 0-0 Ajaib (17-0)
A sharp pot into the middle pocket has Trump in business but his lovely long red into the green pocket sees him lose position.
Trump 0-0 Ajaib (0-0)
An early safety battle in the opener.

Mark Williams is playing Liam Davies and Mark Selby is up against Michael Holt.

Hawkins beats Jones 5-4
He's not sure how he did it but Hawkins has got over the line against Jones.
Hawkins 4-4 Jones (55*-45)
Jones misses a similarly easy green, Hawkins pots it and is on the brown. That should be the game.
Hawkins 4-4 Jones (52-45)
No!!! Hawkins misses the straight-forward green.
Hawkins 4-4 Jones (52*-45)
Jones this time misses a simple yellow to the right middle. Surely Hawkins puts the game to bed now.
Hawkins 4-4 Jones (50-45)
Jones left the yellow on, but Hawkins' long potting is so off today. He missed by a mile...we go on.
Hawkins 4-4 Jones (50-45)
It wiped its feet, but this time the final red goes down and Jones seemed to set clear up but incredibly he snookers himself on the yellow.
Hawkins 4-4 Jones (50-34)
An awful misjudgment from Hawkins on the pink means he loses position and the frame is still up for grabs.
Hawkins 4-4 Jones (35*-34)
Drama as bridging over a red to pot the black, Jones touches the red with his hand. What looked like a winning chance for Jones swings back to Hawkins.
Hawkins 4-4 Jones (28-27*)
Hawkins missed a shot with the rest by a mile and now Jones looks in a good position to take frame and match.
Hawkins 4-4 Jones (28-19)
Jones plays a plant which bounces out of the pocket after wiping its feet, but then Hawkins misses a straight-forward mid-range pot thereafter. Jones pots a tough red, but doesn't get position on a colour.
Hawkins 4-4 Jones (28-1*)
A bit indecisive over whether he could see enough of the red next to the pink to pot it, he misses it and now Jones is at the table with a chance to take the lead in the frame at least.
Hawkins 4-4 Jones (10*-0)
Jones fails to connect on an attempted thin contact on a red and with the cue ball bouncing back to the middle of the table, Hawkins takes on a tough pot and now has the first chance to take the decider.
Hawkins 4-4 Jones
Hawkins misses the next red but the key fact is...we have a decider.
Hawkins 3-4 Jones (74*-0)
A superb clutch break has Hawkins over the line in this frame.
Hawkins 3-4 Jones (9*-0)
A miss with the rest from Jones sees Hawkins first with his hand on the table and it looks well positioned to make a big break.
Hawkins 3-4 Jones (0-0)
Underway in the key eighth frame.
White's unfortunate in-off
It was a match where Jimmy White just came up short in key moments in his defeat to Marco Fu earlier and here was one of those spots.

Disaster for White as Whirlwind pots cue ball on final pink
Video credit: TNT Sports
Hawkins 3-4 Jones
Jones eventually takes the frame and now needs just one more to seal the match.
Hawkins 3-3 Jones (7-59)
It started with a fluke but Jones builds a healthy lead afterwards. Needing just one snooker, Hawkins will feel the frame is still there to win.
Hawkins 3-3 Jones (7-19)
Hawkins' long game isn't on point today. He misses a fairly straight forward attempt by a mile. He is fortunate not to leave anything on.
Hawkins 3-3 Jones (6-15)
Stealthy start to the seventh. Neither player wanting to make an error in this crucial frame.
Hawkins 3-3 Jones
A fine break of 129 from Jones clearing up. Now we have a best of three to reach Round 3.
Hawkins 3-2 Jones (5-80*)
Frame sealed with a composed break, a century looks there for the taking...

Hawkins 2-2 Jones (29*-51)
He left himself a difficult rest shot on the yellow but negotiated it brilliantly and now Hawkins is set for a steal which will sting Jones.
Hawkins 2-2 Jones (0-51)
Frame ball for Jones, but he misses it by a mile. Not the worst table for Hawkins to take advantage on now.
Hawkins 2-2 Jones (0-30)
After good early negotiation of a tricky table, a flick of a red denied him an easy pot and Jones is disappointed to not clinch the frame in this visit.
Hawkins 2-2 Jones (0-1*)
Every red above the pink spot, quite a table layout. A good safety from Jones forced a poor one from Hawkins and now the Welshman is on the board.
Hawkins 2-2 Jones (0-0)
Another tight opening to a frame between these two. The player to progress will have earned it.
Fu beats White 5-2

White needing a couple of snookers and a clearance to stay in the match.
Ding beats Zhang 5-2
Roars from the crowd as Zhang concedes and Ding heads into the second round.

A reprieve for White as Fu just failed to knock a trio of reds into a potable position which would likely have seen him clinch the match.

A break of 79 sees Jones bring the match back to two-apiece. Every frame has been a close one in this session.
Fu 4-2 White
Once more White leaves a ball hanging over a middle pocket, this time the black over the right, gifting Fu what will surely be a key lead.
Fu 3-2 White (63-63)

Ding 4-2 Zhang
A brilliant 126 from Ding leaves the crowd in raptures.
Fu 3-2 White
A break of 87 brings White back into the game.
Hawkins 2-1 Jones (14*-25)
A dastardly snooker from Hawkins sees Jones go for a hit and hope which misses everything. Somehow nothing was left on and he was put back in the snooker. Another hit and hope later and again he missed everything. This time he leaves a red on for Hawkins though.
Ding 3-1 Zhang
A break of 90 re-establishes DIng's two-frame lead.
Hawkins 2-1 Jones (0-25)

Hawkins 1-1 Jones
Jones duly clears up to take the frame and bring things level.
Hawkins 1-0 Jones (53-38*)
A poor attempt at getting out of a snooker from Hawkins. He touched the red, but left it on for Jones who should now clinch the frame at this visit to level things.
Fu 1-1 White
Fu stays in his chair after White leaves him needing snookers. It could be the most intriguing of the early games this one between the old stagers.

White ahead in the second frame and at the table with a chance to clinch it.
Ding 2-0 Zhang
Ding quickly goes two-up in his match against his countryman.

Hawkins straight back with his hand on the table in the second frame.
Hawkins 1-0 Jones
After a very poor start to proceedings, a classy break of 54 from Hawkins to seal the opener.
Hawkins 0-0 Jones (13*-10)
Finally after turgid snooker, the impasse has ended and Hawkins has pot a few balls. The state of the table means a game-winning break is unlikely here.
Ding 0-0 Zhang (50*-11)
After a slow start it looks like Ding will clinch the opener in his match.
Williams 4-5 Xinbo
The last game from the early session has just finished with 17-year-old Xinbo Wang coming out on top.
Fu 1-0 White

White pots the red and a very good black and it looks like we are going to a re-spotted black.

White left a red into the left middle agonizingly short and a good plant from Fu set himself up for a potential game-winning break.
Hawkins 0-0 Jones (0-4)
