Judd Trump hits ‘diabolical’ break-off in nightmare start to 2024 UK Championship against Neil Robertson

Neil Foulds described a break-off by Judd Trump as “diabolical” and one of the worst he has seen by a top player in “some time” during the second frame of his first-round match with Neil Robertson at the UK Championship. The 2019 world champion barely clipped one of the reds in the back corner of the triangle, clipped a yellow on the way back and set the cue ball up perfectly for the Australian.

Judd Trump left Eurosport commentator Neal Foulds completely flabbergasted in the opening stages of his first-round match at the UK Championship, after making what was described as a "diabolical" break-off.
The 2011 winner had just gone 1-0 down in his much-anticipated tie with Neil Robertson, before he made a mistake which resulted in a nightmare start to the second frame.
Getting play back underway again, the former world champion could only clip one of the reds at the back of the triangle, barely dislodging the others before clipping the yellow on the cue ball’s journey back up the table.
The white almost finished back in the middle of the table, not far from the blue, leaving Foulds in disbelief.
"It’s a wild and woolly break-off shot, and he actually hit the yellow, just glanced it on the way back up the table," said Foulds during commentary on Eurosport and discovery+.
"It was a diabolical break actually for a top player. It’s the shot that’s played more than any other, and he’s completely butchered it.
"He’s hit the red so thin and he just glances the yellow. I don’t think I’ve seen a top player misjudge a break-off like that for some time."

Robertson did not run away with the frame and Trump came back into it, before the Australian eventually took a 2-0 lead.
"It’s unusual to come inside the blue, he completely mistimed it," said Eurosport pundit Jimmy White.
"He just completely mistimed it – one of mine."
"Generally if you see a mishit on the break it’s normally pretty thick because you’re allowing for the side to throw it back out," added Reanne Evans.
"But it seems he’s got too much reaction on the cue ball so he’s hit it [the pack] really thin and gone the wrong side of the baulk colours and the blue.
"I think he may have flicked the yellow, but it’s just an odd reaction. With Trump, he comes across the ball a lot, so maybe the conditions aren’t what he’s used to, and he’s trying to adapt a little bit quicker than he normally does."
Trump is attempting to better his run to the semi-finals last year, when he was beaten by Ding Junhui at the York Barbican.
