Matthew Selt produces second 147 of 2026 as snooker's maximum gold rush continues at Championship League

World No. 37 Matthew Selt overcame the disappointment of an early exit at the German Masters by producing the first 147 of his career at the Championship League in Leicester. A week after Chris Wakelin celebrated his maiden maximum, Selt rolled in the perfect clearance against Xiao Guodong at the Mattioli Arena. Selt also reached the semi-finals of the Scottish Open in Edinburgh last month.

Matthew Selt became the latest player to join snooker's remarkable 147 gold rush by compiling a record-extending 18th maximum of the season at the Championship League in Leicester.
Coming a week after Scottish Open winner Chris Wakelin produced his maiden maximum and 17th of the campaign at the same tournament, Selt emulated the landmark feat in the fourth frame of a 3-2 defeat to Xiao Guodong on Thursday evening in Group 4.
Selt reached the semi-finals of the Scottish Open in Edinburgh last month, losing 6-4 to Wakelin in the last four, but suffered a 5-2 loss to Julien Leclercq in the second round of qualifying for the German Masters at Ponds Forge in Sheffield earlier this week.
He is due to return to Sheffield for Welsh Open qualifying on Saturday and a meeting with Steven Hallworth or Alexander Ursenbacher on Saturday at 13:00, live on discovery+.
Wakelin, who watched Ronnie O'Sullivan hit two maximums against him at the Saudi Arabia Masters in August, ended 2025 with a 9-2 win over Chang Bingyu in the Scottish Open final at Meadowbank Sports Centre.
And the world No. 14 picked up from where he left off on the first day of competition at the Mattioli Arena in a 3-2 Group 1 win over Pang Junxu.
Meanwhile, 2023 world champion Luca Brecel suffered more woe as he was edged out of the German Masters 5-4 at the last-64 stage by David Gilbert, who won the final two frames with breaks of 107 and 61.
Elsewhere, Stuart Bingham whitewashed 1997 world champion Ken Doherty 5-0 to reach the last 32, and two-time winner Ali Carter booked his trip to Berlin with a 5-2 win over RIcky Walden.
Carter could face a meeting with old foe O'Sullivan in the last 32 in Berlin if the seven-time world champion can overcome Long Zehuang, who defeated Zhao Hanyang 5-4 in the second qualifying round.
There was also a 5-1 win for Jack Lisowski against Lan Yuhao, but Stephen Maguire, the 2012 finalist, lost 5-4 to Gao Yang and Marco Fu was dumped 5-2 by Jak Jones.
The German Masters is live on TNT Sports and discovery+ between January 26-February 1.
