ENGLAND CLINCH THIRD WORLD CUP CROWN
A five-try performance saw England complete the Women’s Rugby World Cup unbeaten with a 33-13 victory against Canada - in front of a record home crowd at the Allianz Stadium.
A record attendance for a women’s rugby match of 81,885 watched as The Red Roses dominated their opposition to win their third World Cup and first since 2014.
After finishing World Cup runners-up on the last two occasions, England turned their heartache into triumph in their home competition.
Canada were looking to make history of their own and took a fifth-minute lead through star winger Asia Hogan-Rochester.
However, The Red Roses responded and after an Ellie Kildunne try put the hosts ahead on eight minutes, Amy Cokayne and Alex Matthews followed up for a 21-8 lead at half-time.
Abbie Ward added to England’s lead with a fourth try before Canada were given belief by Hannah Botterman’s 52nd-minute yellow card for a dangerous tackle.
Hogan-Rochester quickly pulled Canada back to within 13 points, but England held firm until they returned to their full complement.
A fifth England try from Matthews sealed their success and a third Rugby World Cup for England.
