Italy v Chile LIVE- Quilter Nations Series action as Italy win hard-fought clash 34-19 against Chile in their first ever meeting

Italy had to stave off a brave Chile side in Genoa needing late tries from Monty Ioane to see them over the line.

Tries from Tommaso Di Bartolomeo and Ange Capuozzo helped the Italians to victory after the visitors answered back through Salvador Lues and Nicolas Saab. 

Italy took the lead after 12 minutes as Capuozzo raced through the Chilean defence to give his side the lead.

Di Bartolomeo scored his first try for the Azzurri after 34 minutes once Giacomo De Re had added a penalty to Italy’s lead.

After failing to get into Italy’s half for most of the first period, Salvador Lues managed to cross the line with three minutes to go.

Chile started the quicker after the break and Saab capitalised on a Capuozzo error to pull his side back to within one point.

However, Di Bartolomeo got his second try of the day in the 53rd minute which was followed by Chile’s Clemente Saavedra being sin-binned.

With the man advantage, Italy extended their lead through Ioane who scored two tries to cap off a fantastic Quilter Nations Series.

Chile managed to have the final word as Clemente Saavedra crossed the line in the 79th minute to close a performance his side could be proud of.

"I am very happy about this, it's for the team. We know that this is a very tough game for us. We finished well, now we have improve some little details for the Six Nations. So we're very proud.

"They're such a hard opponent, we prepared for this. I think in a lot of situations we can do better, but maybe tomorrow we'll see the game and we'll improve for the next game.

A bit of fun and teamwork between the two backs after the full-time whistle.

The underdogs will be happy with how they did. There are smiles all over the pitch regardless of the result.

They played their part and will be looking to build from it going forward.

They wanted to win and in style. They managed the first part but in Test rugby they won't mind too much.

And that brings the clash to an end. It wasn't pretty from Italy but they got the job done.

Chile fought hard and will be buoyed by their performance and will take pride from it ahead of the World Cup.

Chile come alive down the left hand side and almost get in if not for some fantastic last-ditch defending.

But Clemente Saavedra picks up the ball and carries it over to have the last say.

The Azzurri's second-row Niccolo Cannone has been named the Quilter Nations Series player of the match.

Chile knock the ball forward and eventually give away a penalty.

They boot the ball deep into Chile's half and in to touch.

The Condores have earned back-to-back lineouts on Italy's five-yard line.

They start a maul but it is quickly moved backwards by the Azzurri.

And that will most likely be that. Italy win a penalty deep in the Chile half and they take it quickly.

They shift the ball to the left and for the second time tonight Monty Ioane finishes easily.

The conversion is missed.

They worked tirelessly to get back into this contest but in the space of ten minutes Italy have opened a 15-point gap and are threatening to increase it.

The hosts win a penalty at the breakdown and kick for the corner.

Just under two minutes until Chile are restored to 15.

Capuozzo penalised for a knock-on under the high-ball. He will be disappointed with that because he was under no pressure.

The hosts work the ball from right to left after winning a free-kick. With the man advantage, Monty Ioane is open to easily go over to increase the Azzurri's lead.

The conversion is good.

With the man advantage, Italy need to make the most of the 10 minutes.
