SCOTLAND DENIED RECORD-BREAKING CALCUTTA CUP WIN BY ENGLAND
Scotland missed the chance to win the Calcutta Cup for a record-breaking fifth consecutive time after Finn Russell’s late conversion went narrowly wide.
Duhan van der Merwe dived over in the corner in the 79th minute to bring Scotland within a point of England, but Scotland’s captain could not add the extra two points from a difficult angle.
Russell missed all three conversions, as England rode their luck to make it two wins from two at Allianz Arena during the Six Nations.
Marcus Smith added six points from the boot during the second half to put England ahead, before Fin Smith’s mammoth strike put the hosts six points clear with 10 minutes to play.
Scotland continued to probe even after Russell’s missed kick, as the clock struck red, but England held strong to ensure they moved second in the table.
Scotland stay in fourth after two straight defeats.
Gregor Townsend’s side took the lead after just four minutes, with Ben White scoring his third try against England, finishing off a brilliant attack from deep started by Van der Merwe.
England fought back immediately through Tommy Freeman, who bundled over to score his third try of the Six Nations, after some brilliant attacking work.
The visitors went back in front mid-way through the first half, working the ball wide after a line-out, before Van der Merwe played the ball inside to Huw Jones to score in the corner.
Scotland had England on the back foot throughout the first half but failed to convert a number of brilliant opportunities.
Steve Borthwick's side struggled to create many try-scoring chances throughout, but battled brilliantly to pick up an important victory.
England now face a trip to Rome to face Italy in two weeks' time, whilst Scotland travel to Cardiff as they take on Wales.

MARO ITOJE: THE PERFORMANCE WAS MIXED
"To be honest, the performance was a bit mixed, and I am pretty sure Scotland played a lot in our half. We fought, we scrapped and ran hard for each other. There is loads for us to get better at, but we are delighted to win.
"I think in the first and second half, we didn't play as much as we wanted to. One thing about us is we have been more clinical than in the past when we get into the opposition half."

"Their defence was really good, but we did not have enough ball during the second half. You have to give credit to them for keeping us out.
"We slipped up with the line-out near the end, and they applied great pressure at the breakdown, so fair play to them."

RUSSELL MISSES CHANCE FOR CALCUTTA CUP HISTORY AS ENGLAND MARCH ON
Scotland thought they had completed a historic fifth consecutive Calcutta Cup victory with moments to play, when Duhan van der Merwe dived over in the corner.
However, Finn Russell missed the crucial conversion to break Scottish hearts, as England held on for their first victory over Scotland in five attempts.
Russell missed all three conversions as Scotland were beaten by just a point at Allianz Arena.
Gregor Townsend's side will rue missed chances in the first half as they dominated England, but could only take a 10-7 lead into the break.
Steve Borthwick's side fought back in the second half through the boot of Marcus and Fin Smith and held off a late Scotland rally for victory.
Scotland's chances of winning the championship are now in tatters, while England remain on the tail of Ireland after two wins in two at home.
