Rob Baxter, Exeter Director of Rugby:
"Do you cry, do you laugh, do you scream? I don't know.
"I said it doesn't have to be a tight, nervy one, but it ended up being that. It was always going to be the game it ended up being for us.
"The pressure on us from results has hampered our performances, it has been our job as coaches to try and take that off the players, but it creeps in. You have to try and avoid being on a roller coaster where you are giving players different messages every week.
"This week we stripped it back and had a very basic plan, and we stuck to it well. I had felt we should've climbed the table earlier and there's still a long way in the season for us, with relatively little travelling left to do.
"The table looks a lot better now, but when I have reviewed our games I can see we are a competitive rugby team in this division."
Match report: EXETER CHIEFS 22-15 GLOUCESTER RUGBY
Exeter Chiefs secured their first Premiership win of the season with a hard-fought 22-15 victory over Gloucester, lifting themselves off the bottom of the table.
First-half tries from Dan Frost and Tamati Tua put Exeter ahead 14-3 at the break, but second-half scores by Gareth Anscombe and Jamal Ford-Robinson saw Gloucester take the lead by the 63rd minute.
A penalty from Henry Slade and a crucial try by Josh Iosefa-Scott sealed the win, bringing relief to a jubilant Sandy Park.
The victory moves Exeter up to ninth place, overtaking Newcastle Falcons, while Gloucester stay sixth, missing the chance to break into the top four.
Henry Slade, Exeter Chiefs said:
"It's awesome to see a sell-out crowd and get the win. The boys are on fire. It's a huge pressure off the young teams' shoulders.
"Rob Baxter has stuck to what he believes in, and we’ve been resilient. The boys have been fighting and scrapping every time they get on the field. To be on the right side of it today has been a relief.
We’ve had to make little changes, we’re playing a lot differently. You only evolve if you keep changing things. It is a weird feeling to wait this long for the first win of the season."
Dan Frost, Exeter Chiefs said:
"There's nearly 16,000 people here and to put on a performance like that and get the win just after Christmas is massive for us.
"It's been tough. Every moment, we just got back in the game. Our effort and energy has always been there, and today it all clicked."
