Marcus Smith was desperately close to landing a conversion for Harlequins in their match against Sale on Saturday afternoon, but he missed in highly unusual circumstances.
The 26-year-old England international took the kick on the left-hand side of the pitch after his team-mate Cadan Murley had put the side 15-12 ahead with a try on his return to the side.
While the tight angle posed something of a challenge for Smith, the England maestro appeared to be up to the task as he sent the ball towards the posts.
Initially it seemed that the wind would help guide the ball between the posts for two extra points, but the flight of the ball then wobbled and it struck the posts, with Smith already running back towards his team-mates as he expected the conversion to be successful.
Incredibly, the ball then bounced down onto another post, back up onto the opposite post, before returning for a fourth bounce, with no indication until the last second whether Harlequins would get the additional points or not.
Unfortunately for the home side and Smith, the ball ultimately bounced back out.
"Oh my goodness, have you ever seen that!' wondered TNT Sports commentator Jamie Lyall.
"One, two, three, four touches..."
Interjecting, Austin Healey added: "I don't think I've ever seen it hit it four times...he thought he had it."
