Warren Gatland hopes Owen Farrell’s decision will be turning point against abuse in rugby - ‘A watershed moment’

Wales head coach Warren Gatland has addressed Owen Farrell's decision to step away from international rugby, and hopes it will serve as a jolt for the sport's authorities to tackle abuse within rugby. Farrell has come in for a slew of criticism after a difficult year with England, which culminated in an impressive and largely unexpected run to the World Cup semi-finals.

Wales head coach Warren Gatland hopes that Owen Farrell's decision to take a break from international rugby will be a turning point in the ongoing battle against abuse in the sport.
The England captain has faced intense scrutiny this year, despite leading his country to a surprise third-place finish at the Rugby World Cup.
That criticism was heard before England's 30-24 quarter-final win over Fiji, as his name was booed after being read out over the loudspeakers at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille.
This led to England's attack coach Richard Wigglesworth issuing a passionate defence of the skipper, and said, "the tallest trees catch the most wind and he seems to catch a fair bit."
Steve Borthwick's side had a far-from-ideal preparation for the tournament itself, following an underwhelming fourth-place finish at the Six Nations and defeats in the World Cup warm-up matches against Wales, Ireland and Fiji respectively.
"In many ways Owen's decision represents a watershed moment for the game," said Gatland in quotes published by the Daily Telegraph.
"It is a sad day for rugby and a sad day for sport to see someone of Owen's standing in the game have to make the decision to walk away from the international stage just to protect his family.
"But, ironically in making his decision, it might be the best thing for the game in that it will highlight some of the terrible things that are happening in rugby, particularly on the social media front.
"Given what Owen has achieved in the game, he probably doesn't realise, but I think it will have a positive impact and make people sit up and make a stand."
The current Wales and former British and Irish Lions coach also revealed some of the abuse he and his family have received, before urging the sport of rugby to do more to tackle this issue.
"I am largely protected from the abuse because I am not on social media, but my family are, and they see things and it can seep through," he said.
"And, for a few years now I have been targeted by a troll who managed to get hold of my mobile phone number and has been sending me smart, snidey comments.
"Ultimately the rugby community cares about people and I think it is time for the vast majority of us who are disgusted about what is happening to stand up for each other a bit more, or if you see something online that is out of order, shoot it down.”
