LEICESTER TIGERS DOMINATE SECOND HALF TO BEAT NORTHAMPTON IN EAST MIDLANDS DERBY
Leicester Tigers produced a superb second-half performance to beat Northampton Saints 28-7 at Mattioli Woods Welford Road and claim the bragging rights in the East Midlands derby.
After a scrappy opening 40 minutes, the hosts came out firing after the break, scoring four second-half tries to secure a convincing victory in front of a sold-out crowd.
Northampton made the brighter start with James Pater opening the scoring after collecting a kick from Fin Smith following an error by Leicester fly-half Billy Searle. Smith added the conversion to give Saints a 7-0 lead.

Whatever was said in the Leicester dressing room appeared to have the desired effect, as the hosts came out with renewed intensity in the second half.
Jamie Blamire got the Tigers’ comeback underway, finishing a powerful driving maul from a lineout. Searle missed the conversion, but Leicester edged ahead 8-7.
The hosts continued to dominate up front with a destructive scrum laying the foundations for their next try. Leicester worked the ball wide after the set-piece pressure, allowing Cameron Henderson to cross in the corner and extend their lead.

Finn Carnduff then bundled over following more impressive work from the Tigers’ forwards, although another missed conversion meant Leicester were unable to add the extra two points.
Northampton struggled to respond, with their discipline becoming a major concern as they conceded their 17th penalty. Searle punished them from in front of the posts to move Leicester further clear at 21-7.
There was late drama when Adam Radwan was initially shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on. However, after a lengthy TMO review identified a high collision by Northampton replacement Tom Lockett in the build-up, Radwan’s yellow was overturned, and Lockett was sent to the sin bin instead.
Steward put the finishing touch on Leicester’s performance with a fourth try in the 72nd minute. The full-back showed excellent footwork to beat Fin Smith and cross under the posts, with Searle converting to make it 28-7.

'IT WAS SCRAPPY, GRITTY, PROPER OLD SCHOOL RUGBY'
Freddie Steward tells TNT Sports: "I've not got much of a voice left but as a lad who grew up supporting Leicester Tigers, this is the fixture. I just love it, everything about it. It was scrappy, gritty, proper old school rugby, which we like."

On half-time row: "It's part of the game. Emotions are high, it's physical, everything's in your face. We were frustrated in the first half. We went inside and said to keep it simple, work hard, stick to the set-piece and it will come."
