Leicester Tigers full-back Mike Brown has been suspended for two weeks for swearing at match officials after he was sent off during the 21-19 loss at home to Bristol Bears in the Gallagher Premiership.
The former England international received a second yellow from referee Matthew Carley in the 71st minute for making direct head contact with Benhard Janse van Rensburg as the Tigers surrendered a 19-0 lead to lose to a last-minute Magnus Bradbury try, a result which ended their hopes of reaching the play-offs.
An independent disciplinary panel ruled Brown would not be punished further for his red card, but the 38-year-old’s actions as he left the pitch at Welford Road were deemed to be in breach of RFU rule 5.12, which is related to abuse of match officials.
Brown was given a five-week ban, although three are suspended until the end of next season provided he gives a presentation on the values of the game.
The sanction means the former England international will miss Leicester’s friendly against Georgian side Black Lion and the Gallagher Premiership game against Sale Sharks on May 10, live on TNT Sports.
Chair of the panel Philip Evans KC said: “The player accepted the charge of conduct prejudicial to the interests of the union and the game by disrespecting the authority of a match official.
“The panel suspended the player for five weeks, three of which are suspended until the end of the 24/25 season and on condition that the player gives a presentation on the values of the game which is to be recorded and shared with the RFU for educational use and to help demonstrate why such behaviour will not be tolerated in rugby.
“The player also received two yellow cards in the match which he did not challenge.
“The applicable sanction where one card is for a technical offence and one is for foul play is sending off sufficient and in the absence of any aggravating features specific to this matter (the misconduct being brought as a separate charge), this was the sanction applied.”
