‘Makes me raise my level’ – Ryding motivated by next generation of British skiers

Ryding is one of Britain’s most successful skier having clocked up seven medals on the World Cup circuit, as well as becoming the first alpine skier from these shores to win World Cup gold (2022).
It is that experience and know-how in the men’s slalom that has led friend and one-time rival, Fritz Dopfer to suggest there could be a fairytale finale for the Lancashire-born star, who is featuring in his fifth and final Games.
"He is a really experienced guy who knows how to handle difficult situations, so I will keep my fingers crossed for him," Dopfer told the official Olympics website.
"If the course setting is special and you have to ski clean and clever, then Dave is one of the top shots. I’ll (be cheering) for Dave."
Ryding, who bagged GB’s best finish (sixth) by a male athlete at a World Championship since 1934 recently, will feature as part of a skiing trio for Team GB alongside Billy Major and Laurie Taylor with Dopfer adding that the camaraderie within the ranks is key to their hopes.
"There is a great team spirit that they have," he added.
"Dave is kind of the boss of the team, and Laurie and Billy are two great guys who push each other to the highest-level during training.
"They are really role models for every other athlete – against all odds, they are doing it and are a really successful team."
