MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin is set to miss this weekend’s Grand Prix of Thailand after suffering a new injury during training in Spain.
It has been a luckless build-up to the 2025 season for Martin, who suffered a huge crash in Malaysia earlier this month and needed surgery after breaking his hand and foot.
And now the 27-year-old Spaniard fractured his left hand while training, meaning he will be absent from the first race of the new campaign.
Martin's new Aprilia team confirmed the injury in a statement, which read: "Jorge Martin suffered a complex fracture of the radius, some carpal bones on the left side and an ipsilateral calcaneal fracture of the left hand during a training session.
"After a surgical consultation, it was decided to proceed with surgery, which will take place tomorrow at the Dexeus Clinic in Barcelona to stabilise the fractures of the radius and the left scaphoid.
"Martin will miss the Thailand Grand Prix and recovery times will be determined after the surgery.
"Lorenzo Savadori will replace Martin in Thailand."
It is not yet known whether he will be ready to ride in the second race of the season, the Argentina Grand Prix - which is three weeks away on March 16.
A further statement on Tuesday read "Jorge Martín has undergone surgery at the Dexeus Clinic in Barcelona by Professor Mir and his team.
"The procedure was completed successfully, with the implantation of two screws at the level of the radius fracture and one at the level of the left scaphoid for stabilization and to facilitate the healing process.
"Surgery was done via a percutaneous approach with arthroscopic assistance. In the coming days, the prognosis will be evaluated on the basis of Jorge’s clinical condition."
Martin enjoyed a dream year in 2024, which culminated in him clinching the world title in Barcelona.
"I am completely shocked," Martin said as he celebrated that victory. "This is for my family, for the people who are supporting me, this is for them.
"I started crying at the end. It was a really emotional race. It's been a long journey with a lot of crashes and big injuries, but finally we are here. I hope we can keep improving and enjoy the moment."
