Stoner and Simoncelli do not improve... how about Lorenzo? NO! POLE FOR STONER!!

0'

The chequered flag is out but they can finish their lap...

1'

Simoncelli having another crack... second again! Just misses out!

3'

Simoncelli just misses out two, going second and nudging Lorenzo into third.

4'

Lorenzo is going well, a red helmet after three sectors... SECOND!! Lost a quarter of a second on the final sector.

6'

It's last chance saloon time and here's how they stand: 1-Stoner, 2-Simoncelli, 3-Lorenzo, 4-Spies, 5-Dovizioso.

8'

Here's Stoner on a flier... YES! 2:02.020 for the Australian! Scintillating pace and he bests Simoncelli by a quarter of a second!

10'

Still no joy for Rossi, who is effectively 13th of 15. Nicky Hayden is running over a second and a half faster than his Ducati team-mate.

13'

Simoncelli, magical! He goes fastest by five hundredths of a second! 2:02.389 the Italian's lap. Hats off Sideshow Bob.

14'

The cloud cover has increased markedly since the start of qualifying, and the track temperature may cool slightly as the session winds down.

15'

More from the medical centre - Cal Crutchlow has a broken left collarbone AND concussion. He's on his way to hospital in Oxford.

17'

Boom, Stoner! 2:02.442 from the Aussie, who gets a smile from his lovely wife in the pits. Fantastic lap from the Aussie. He goes fastest.

20'

Fair play to the heavily injured Colin Edwards, who is still running 10th. You cannot believe the toughness of these riders. Nearly all of them are carrying injuries, but they just get on with it.

21'

Rossi is still way down in 14th - 3.7 seconds off the pace. That really is sad to see. I know he's never raced at Silverstone, but that doesn't account for such a colossal lack of pace.

23'

2:03.212 for Ben Spies in fourth - that's his quickest lap of the weekend.

25'

That broken collarbone for Cal Crutchlow has now been confirmed. That is his weekend over, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

28'

Simoncelli dips under the 2:03 mark, but is still a third of a second behind Jorge Lorenzo.

30'

Halfway through the session, here's how they stand: 1-Lorenzo 2:02.611, 2-Stoner 2:03.095, 3-Simoncelli 2:03.214, 4-Spies 2:03.633, 5-Dovizioso 2:03.838, 6-Hayden, 7-Bautista, 8-Barbera, 9-Aoyama, 10-Edwards.

31'

If, as we now expect, Cal Crutchlow cannot take part tomorrow, that means there will be only 15 riders on the grid and guaranteed points for anyone who makes it full race distance.

33'

Wow, what a lap by Jorge Lorenzo! 2:02.611 from the Spaniard - over half a second quicker than Stoner and Simoncelli!

35'

Bad news from the medical centre, and confirmation of what we feared - Cal Crutchlow has a suspected broken collar bone.

37'

Valentino Rossi is still way down in 13th place over three seconds off the pace.

39'

Another faller - this time it's Toni Elias. He's absolutely fine, and no major damage to the bike as far as we can tell. Lost the back end approaching a left-hander.

41'

Incidentally, that Simoncelli breaks the Silverstone pole position record and was achieved on hard tyres!

42'

Simoncelli improves again to 2:03.214. Next come Stoner, Lorenzo, Spies and Dovizioso. Rossi way down in 13th.

43'

There are reports that Cal Crutchlow is being lifted into the air ambulance. That is unconfirmed, but if true it would hint at a break. Nuts...

45'

Great lap from Marco Simoncelli, and he has clocked a 2:03.438 - brilliant stuff from the Italian who has been strong all weekend.

47'

No word yet on Cal Crutchlow, but that did lookl horribly like a collar bone injury. Let's hope not.

50'

Lorenzo improves his fastest lap to 2:04.060... then again to 2:03.867.

52'

Faller... and it's Crutchlow! Oh no! He slides down the road clutching what looks worryingly like his collarbone. What a disaster. Fingers crossed he is not too badly hurt.

54'

Jorge Lorenzo posts the first quick-ish lap of the day - 2:05.672. As a frame of reference, the quickest lap in practice this morning was a 2:03.487 by Casey Stoner.

56'

The air temperature is 18C, but the track is a relatively warm (for Britain) 36C.

58'

Home favourite Cal Crutchlow is one of the last men out of the pits, along with Valentino Rossi.

60'

Away we go! The hour-long qualifying session is under way, and a stream of bikes snakes out of the pits!
